Rent @Campbelltown
Sun, 12 Feb 2006, 04:30 pmHeaded out to Campbelltown fri night as I read they were doing my fave show of all time, RENT!, nervous and excited to see what they had done with Larsen's brilliance... Not only did they far surpass two previous productions of RENT! I have seen recently, but made me laugh, cry and moo! They didn't just play roles, they appeared to be LIVING them... Voices were varied, but beautiful, raw and passionate, relationships unfolded before and I actually believed them - Maureen and Joanne were just perfect, not butch and sterotypical, angel and Collins ripped my heart apart and Roger and Mimi burned me! The ensemble came together tightly, voices meshed in hot harmonies which tingled the spine... all up a fantastic performance! No day but today!

Just scanned comments. I didn't see your production, BUT have to say, the attitude, coming from the company is what gives amateur!(community theatre) a bad name. Yes, you should have fun, BUT are you charging the public to see the best quality production you can present, or charging the public to view your self-indulgence? 'Collins' "I broke down when I saw my children etc.etc." you are playing a role, and should, at all times be playing that role, not crying over your kids seeing you on-stage - self indulgent, un-professional and AMATEUR!!! Biggest no-no in theatre is cast out the front before curtain up, (and after in make-up/costume) and not only do High Schools, not allow it but Primary Schools, as well! Yes! I know the show well, could sing it from beginning to end, care of devoted 'rent' fans, my children. I was at opening night Sydney, Rockdale, and the CD in this house is worn out, thanks to my children playing it for around 4 years non-stop. Had a few years respite, and because of Rockdales production, it started again. Only last week the younger, now 24, hired the DVD, so I can assure you I know the show well AND I love it. BUT these type of shows seem to lend themselves to self-indulgence.Rather than trying to be as professional, in attitude & performance as one can be, with limited funds and facilities, you seem to have self indulged and praised yourselves, just a little too much.
PS: Rockdale's show had some really strong performances, BUT the direction was apalling!
Guess what? There is always another show, and one day far more important memories will prevail, than "when you wre in Rent at..."
