Hey everyone,
I chasing sound and lighting courses in W.A. Would FTI be the best place to go? Or the academy? Prefer short term courses.
I live in Margaret River and manage the community cinema that operates in the Cultural Centre, under the organisation Arts Margaret River. We also have touring performances and local shows staged there. We have been discussing the benefits of having one of us fully trained in these areas as we can rarely afford to hire professionals from Perth or Bunbury (we are a non-profit organisation) so it seems smart to have a local. (more often then not, volunteering their time)
Has anyone any suggestions?
cheers

One suggestion is to just get specific training for what you want to learn, or need to know, as most courses try to cover Life, The Universe and Everything when all you need to know is the answer.

Some tasks such as projectionist need a certificate due to regulations, other areas achieve certificates such as first aid certificate, restricted electrical license as part of the course, but the end course certificate is not essential, just desirable when putting a CV together or when applying for a job and the employer does not know you.

Have a talk to Ian Ashton at Starlight Theatre Lighting at Kwinana Community Arts Centre.

If you can do paperwork, there is funding available through arts agencies for trainers to come to you, it just takes time.
