Chookas...?

Can anyone explain the origin of the expression "Chookas" (or "chukkas" or however it's spelt) to wish someone good luck in a show?

I must have used it or had it said to me a thousand times, but I can't say that I really know what it means...?

Which came first, the "Chooka" or the "Leg"?

Thanks, BarbZ.
I wasn't around to see that thread. Sorry to be covering old ground.
The postings were interesting, although I'm still no further enlightened. I'll endeavour to look into it further.

As to the other theories & superstitions, I'd heard of most of them, but in not quite as much detail.
My understanding of it not being lucky to say "good luck" is linked with the sprites idea (the pixies that take anything you say and create the opposite).
Because in a theatre you often have to do things like open an umbrella indoors, or walk under ladders (things traditionally bad luck in the outside world), the whole concept of luck is turned around once you're in a theatre.
So you don't say "good luck". (kinda like the way we love using this insult button!)

I wonder if "chookas" is a corruption of a word in another language?

Cheers (I mean, Get Stuffed!) :-)
