The microphone used for Death will most likely be worn under a mask (latex or something similar) so the *visibility* of it isn't as important as how much of the extra sound it picks up.
I'm not certain what sort of mikes we used for Death & Mort, but I think they were normal lapel-type mikes, taped to the actors faces. For Mort's part where he needs the mike (when he sounds like Death in Act 2) we just used flesh-coloured tape and the poor guy had to put up with it. (No, it wasn't me, I played a number of doubling roles)
Sorry I can't help much, but if you can get a decent microphone it's certainly worth the effort, because Death's voice really needs it...
