I am very interested in getting into the buissness, I have recently handed in my application for the stage managment course in WAAPA. However, no one can give me a straight answer on the avarage earning of a SM. If anyone could e-mail me and tell me the general wages for this occupation it would be much appreciated. I do realise payment hanges from show to show, but on avarage.

Stage managers are covered under the Live Theatre and Concert Award, which is federal award and most companies in Aust. are signatories to this is award or the relevant state award has similar rates.
The award works on levels, of which there are 7. Stage manager being the highest. The weekly award wage for an sm under this award is $665.35 or casual $21.00 per hour. Generally most companies pay above the award for a fulltime sm to cover all hours worked during rehearsals and tech week. i.e for your over time. This is counter balanced by the less number of hours you have to do when the show is up and running generally 4 - 6 hours.
As Jason said what you earn relies on how much work you get. And the good one stay employed pretty much most of the time.
Just make sure that once you leave waapa you are willing to work in any area of tech theatre, this gives you a better understanding of all the other areas and makes you a better stage manager.
