Hi there, my name is Dean Kaplan and I have currently finished year 12. I am 18 years old and love all technical elements of theatre, film and tv. I was writing to anyone that can help me. I was turned down by TAFE for the film and television course, applied for Lighting at WAAPA and have not found out yet either way.

So I was writing to anyone out there that can help me. I am interested in almost everything in the TECHNICAL Arts. I am currently looking for a course, to cater for Production Design. I have many talents, and therefore narrowed it down (if you want to called it Narrowed) to Production Design. I dont know what is best for me, but know that I want to get into the Entertainment Industry.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, captures my heart. I get the most unbelievable RUSH when watching it. I have so many ideas for stories, productions etc...that I dont know how or where I could get qualifications and the experience to get started.
Companies like Cirque Du Soleil, have job openings but the only thing needed is EXPERIENCE and some qualifications. So I need to know from someone, how I get that experience (obviously in pro-am productions i have been involved) but where can I study to get a qualification in being CREATIVE, for film, tv, and theatre.

So if someone can help me, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.
DEAN

Re: Career Path ~ To be or Not to be, need some advice please

Hi Dean,

Far out, they're keeping you waiting!! A year ago, I graduated from Curtin Uni (Perth) with a BA(English) majoring in theatre arts. In this course I learned not only about performing, but about heaps of backstage and production areas. First year doesn't offer a unit in those areas, but you're totally encouraged to get involved.

the Hayman Theatre put on six major productions and up to 18 smaller shows each year. These can only happen because of the students who make up cast, crew and sometimes writers. I don't quite know how you could manage it, but I'm sure there is a way in which you could do what you love there.

The school and degree has changed slightly since I completed it; but I believe it is still very cultural studies-based. the Theatre side of things though is very practical. Students are offered the chance to be stage managers, lighting/sound/set designers/operators, scriptwriters, actors, and heaps of other things.

My best advice would be to call them (and I have no idea whether you're in Perth) and ask them what are the possibilities and options they have available. It may be a little late to get in now, but it is worth a try. The number at the Hayman Theatre office is 08 9266 2076. Leigh is the Theatre Secretary - he's fantastic!!! Either he or Duncan should be able to give you some ideas.

I hope this helps.
