Hello there
I am close to a 17 years old studant and have done almost to 2 years of work in the theatre at my school, not only have i worked on school functions which include running school assemblys, various play and performances, music concerts and an HSC exam, but also a number of dance schools and academys, musicals and dramatic performances.

My main training has been towards lighting operation and the electrics side of the theatre at the school, but I have also go my hands into Flying, stage management and a little sound work.

What i'm really looking for is career advise and work for the future. If anyone could offer their opinion or advise i'd be very grateful.

i'm quite keen, and dont mind getting my hands dirty. I'm also interested in getting my skills up even further and dont mind working in my school holidays, anyone willing to offer a part time/ full time job in the Sydney metro area as an experience for me, i'd jump at the chance.
If you can offer any help, advise or want more information about me, please email me at: cpooge@hotmail.com

If you are willing, there are a few courses around that offer Technical/Stage Management courses for theatre. To my knowledge, there are six institutions that offer this sort of course - UNSW (I think) and NIDA in NSW, QUT, USQ and JCU in QLD and WAPA in WA. *Aparantly* NIDA is the best of these courses, followed by USQ, but don't take my word for anything :) I'm currently a first year student in the course at USQ (Toowoomba) and I think the course is great. Through most of the courses there has been a trend towards the SM side of things, but the balance is slowly shifting to a more even mix of tech and SM. If you could put up with going to uni for three years to learn more, I'd recommend it. Just having the degree can be useful, and there is always the oportunity to expand the work you do through your course and institution (we crew about 7 shows a year at USQ) by working part-time at a local theatre as well. Something for you to think about and consider.
