"Someone Who'll Watch Over Me"
Sun, 25 Mar 2001, 06:50 pmGarrick Theatre's latest production, directed by Norma Standing is another powerful play which demands much of both actors and audience. This was evident last night , full house and you could have heard a pin drop (apart from overhead Boeings)
The story line is 3 people, an American (Jarrad West) an Irishman (Jon Lloyd)and an Englishman (David McGarr) have been kidnapped by Lebanese terrorists and imprisoned in a room devoid of windows and with only the Bible and the Koran for reading matter. how do they cope?
Well, acting wise, magnificently. It was impossible to single out any one of the three but I have to say that David's look of anguish/terror/hope as he ends up beig the only one still imprisoned after one has been released and the other ?shot, ? released will stay with me for a long time.
So how do they cope. with humour and mutual support interspersed with anger at each other over often minor details. In spite of it's grim subject this play has many lighter moments interspersed with the fear and boredom of their captivity.

I recommend this play to anyone who likes to see Theatre at its best. I went along to the Sunday performance with seven friends and we were all blown away by the quality of what we saw and heard. Congratulations to Norma and her cast and crew. I wont venture into knowledable critic mode, but the ability of the cast to keep the audience spellbound within the constaints of those chains was incredible. If you haven't seen it yet make sure you do.
