American needs advice please!
Sun, 28 May 2000, 03:45 amHi - I am an American student coming to Australia in order to study and HOPEFULLY test out the acting scene. I am coming in August, but I have no idea how to get into the scene. Does anyone have any advice? I will be in Queensland, studying at Bond. I appreciate any help!! I have experience in modelling and theatre and an interest in TV and film. Thank you
Jackie

RE: American needs advice please!
Dear Jackie,
I hope the following helps!
1) Get an agent.
Find out who all the agents are in your area (try the Yellow Pages). Get a fantastic CV together (include acting, dance and/or voice training, performance experience and other talents such as horseriding, abseling etc). Phone the agent/agency and if they sound like someone you would want representing you then make an appointment to see them. If they won't make an appointment with you for whatever reason, just turn up and leave a CV and a photo. If you don't have a CV, just turn up and impress them however you can. (Of course they still might not sign you up but at least you will have tried).
2) Look out for auditions.
Read the entertainment sections of all the papers. Search the net for anything regarding theatre/TV in Queensland. Write to all the TV/film production houses and send them your CV and a photo (get a quality black and white, professional portrait taken).
3) Do some training.
If you are not already studying in this area, get some (or further your) training in performing arts. The more skills you have, the more employable you are. You also hear alot more about what's going on in the industry if you are at a performing arts school or learning from someone in the business.
4) Do some student films/amateur theatre.
If you don't have much experience you can gain more and if you are experienced you can continue to put your skills into practice. You may also meet some like-minded people who will join you and support you in your quest.
Cheers and Good Luck,
Gill
