The convention is for most shows to start at 8pm.

Is this convenient? Would earlier or later be more suitable?

I think most people prefer going to see a theatre show later for many reasons: a) they usually have to get to wherever they're going from work

b) parking is usually more limited around a theatre, than at a cinema

c) seating is also more limited, in your smaller venues, requiring a wait at the box office to buy tickets (compare that with a cinema, where if you miss the start time to the movie, you know you still have time because of the preview ads, and the fact that you could go see a different showing of that movie, or a different movie at the time that you arrive).

d) i find that with family and friends, they prefer to have a meal before/after the show, whereas if they go to see a movie, they prefer a coffee or a snack, or just munch on lollies/popcorn. it's hard to organise a meal around a show which starts earlier (especially if you're coming straight from work, and want to eat beforehand), and if you start it later, then it's too late to go out and eat.

anyway, that's from my personal experience...
