Re: IFAC/Equity Awards
Tue, 26 Oct 2004, 01:33 amG'day Dave.
Last year, it was considered a courtesy to announce the entire list of those who had been submitted for nomination, in the belief it would give an indication as to the depth of talent being considered for the awards.
On the night, this list of 70-odd names was reduced to the 30 or so finalists, from which the winners in 6 or 7 categories were announced.
(Excuse me if these numbers are approximate, I'm going from memory here!)
Unfortunately, this act of goodwill seemed to backfire. Certain persons on the submission list began promoting themselves as being 'nominated for' various awards - which technically was not true. There was also some disappointment from a few who were under the impression they had made the list of finalists - also not true.
It was really a misunderstanding of the terminology...nominations, finalists, winners....most people regarded the word 'nomination' in the way we hear it at the Academy Awards, basically meaning 'finalist'.
There were also the cynics who thought that publishing a longer list of names was an attempt to attract more ticket sales. Unfortunately, because of the confusion, this may have actually occurred...although it was not intentional.
So to save the disappointment and confusion, the list of nominees is not going to be published by the Awards committee. I'm not certain if the list of finalists will be announced before the event...that's probably up to the judges?
Cheers
Craig
