Re: IFAC/Equity Awards

G'day Dave.

Last year, it was considered a courtesy to announce the entire list of those who had been submitted for nomination, in the belief it would give an indication as to the depth of talent being considered for the awards.

On the night, this list of 70-odd names was reduced to the 30 or so finalists, from which the winners in 6 or 7 categories were announced.

(Excuse me if these numbers are approximate, I'm going from memory here!)

Unfortunately, this act of goodwill seemed to backfire. Certain persons on the submission list began promoting themselves as being 'nominated for' various awards - which technically was not true. There was also some disappointment from a few who were under the impression they had made the list of finalists - also not true.
It was really a misunderstanding of the terminology...nominations, finalists, winners....most people regarded the word 'nomination' in the way we hear it at the Academy Awards, basically meaning 'finalist'.

There were also the cynics who thought that publishing a longer list of names was an attempt to attract more ticket sales. Unfortunately, because of the confusion, this may have actually occurred...although it was not intentional.

So to save the disappointment and confusion, the list of nominees is not going to be published by the Awards committee. I'm not certain if the list of finalists will be announced before the event...that's probably up to the judges?

Cheers
Craig

It would make sense for the judges to publish the finalists' names. After all, if they don't, there's a very real possibility that the winners may not even be at the ceremony to accept their awards.

And besides, your response to my question spotlights the inherent appeal to the average actor of being a nominee (or finalist - make your selection from the semantic catalogue) - it feels good to not only receive the nod, but also to be _known_ as having received it.

Re: IFAC/Equity Awards

I believe all nominees in each category have already been contacted and invited to attend the awards on the night.

As far as I know, there are 5 finalists per category. Perhaps Craig, you might be able to give us a a list of all the awards which will be awarded? Are there any new ones this year?

Re: IFAC/Equity Awards categories

8 Awards are continued from last year:

These 2 are selected by the Guild committee from the written nominations received:

These 6 are selected by the panel of judges who attend the plays:
Best Actor - Female
Best Actor - Male
Best Newcomer

Best New Play

This year 2 new awards are being added, also to be selected by the judging panel:

Re: Equity Guild Awards ( not IFAC )

Whoops! Should have caught this at the start of the thread..

The IFAC (International Foundation for Arts and Culture) are NOT sponsoring the WA Equity Guild Awards this year. Sponsorship was withdrawn when chairman Mr Handa did not feel he was properly acknowledged by the Ministry of the Arts for his contributions (over $350,000 over the past six years) to the local arts scene.

Instead, he is now sponsoring the Storm The Stage Rotary Challenge, and providing the $5000 cash prize.

I wasn't able to attend the Awards night this year, due to it clashing with the last Hoo-Haa at the Freo, so apologies for taking a few days to report the results. Apparently it was a very successful event, at the new venue of the Royal Perth Yacht Club function room, and was fully sold out.
