Work Out?
Mon, 21 July 2003, 12:43 pmWhat do you do to stay in shape phsically? How long should you work out without over doing it?
I mean you need to focus first and foremost on acting but how much time should be spent on physical fitness? I mean were not supposed to be athletic but we have to be fit maybe even fighting fit.
I am trying to work out 2-3 times a week, but I feel out of place, my fitness and coordination is average but inconsistent so i'm just aiming for consistency. I used to do Karate and am thinking of taking it up again but I don't wan't it to conflict with my acting. What do you guys do to balance things out and how much time should a actor be putting into physical work outs without jeopardising his acting.

I'm probably not your average case, but I've never really had to bother with working out, because I do so many shows with Barking Gecko (average 3 a week, often twice a day), which not only usually includes an hour of aerobic running around, gymnastic stunts, and choreography, in often strenous postures; but about 20 minutes before and after of lifting and carrying set pieces and sound equipment.

Yes. Pretty important for our profession. The reverse argument is that I keep getting this type of work precisely BECAUSE I keep so fit and strong.
In between times I play volleyball once a week, like to swim & snorkel in summer (never swim laps though - just swim for fun) and ride a bike, and although I never used to, I'm finding it helpful to stretch properly every morning. (Probably should be doing yoga, I've done a bit but I never stick with it).
Other casual jobs I sometimes get involve hiking, scubadiving, rockclimbing, kayaking, etc...so again no need to work out so long as I keep regularly active.

How about this for a suggestion? Next time you have a monologue or lines to learn, go over them while doing pushups or swimming laps or whatever your workout routine is. The repetitive activity and oxygenating the blood can get your mind focussed at the same time as you're keeping fit.
Apart from that, I reckon whatever you do to keep in shape should be FUN. No sense torturing yourself endlessly in a gym if you'd be having much more fun playing tennis...
