Oh I couldn't agree more: in my above case, greater attention could have been provided since the director (new, but supposedly had acting training in the US) knew that the senior citizen was a bit dotty and provided no support whatsoever in teaching the actress (also supposedly with great TV experience but little to no theatre experience in some few decades) to learn the exits and entrances. In this case, it's a matter of the director being so blindsided by aesthetics to care much about the safety and wellbeing of an actress who on a number of occasions could have walked off the front of the stage without knowing it. It's like that old saying, measure twice cut once. I think very few directors actually appreciate the limits of physics and human abilities when it comes to props, sets, scene changes, and everything else.
