Options for beginners - theatre groups or short classes?

Hi all, My apologies if I have posted this in the wrong forum - this one seemed the most appropriate. My question is, what do you feel would be the better option for beginner? Joining a local theatre group, or going for a short introductory course on acting? I'm 25 and would like to see if acting is something I could have some fun with as a hobby. For a while now I've been googling around, looking for a group who offer short introductory courses to acting, but I can't find any in my area. Everything I've found so far either seems to be interstate, or for under 18s. (I'm in Brisbane). The other option is to join a theatre group, but I thought perhaps paying for some proper tuition would be a better way to go? Are there any beginner clinics around Brisbane as introductions to what acting is all about? If anybody has any suggestions, I would be very appreciative. Thank you! -lilly

Options for Beginners

Join a local theatre troupe/club.

Go in the deep end- offer to sweep the floor/make the tea/ paint the set. ANYTHING.

Look at your local community (alias amateur)theatres and contact them.

Once people see that you are keen then you will be happily accepted. Also starting at the bottom gives you the chance to see how things- and people- operate. then you will soon realise that you either love the life or not!

Don't expect to star, you may be lucky to score a leading role, or you may not, but if you show that you are happy to do whatever is needed then  it's a foot in the door.

Above all-do not get discouraged. It's sometimes hard to break into any established company but KEEP TRYING.

Hi Norma,Thank you for

Hi Norma, Thank you for your reply. That's a good idea! There is a theatre just around the corner from me. I'll get in touch and see if they'd let me volunteer in any way. Fingers crossed. - lilly

Options for Beginners

Hey Lilly, I would definitely recommend Norma's option of checking out your local theatre company and i fully endorse what she has said. By going along to the theatre, you can get a feel for the craft by talking to other performers & interacting with the group as a whole (ie painting sets, working back-stage, even going through the audition process) It's a great buzz to be involved in community theatre and I think you would find it well worth your while. Regards, Mark

Thanks for the reply,

Thanks for the reply, Mark. I'll definitely follow up with the volunteering at amateur theatre. A few weeks ago I went to see a play at a local community theatre and they had an advert in their newsletter, looking for people to paint sets, so I'll give them a call. :) I didn't hear back from the first place I contacted, so perhaps they have enough volunteers for now. I've also signed up for a beginner's acting course with nida-on-tour in july which should be a lot of fun!!
