The perils of outdoor venues

Ian's right about the suitability of outdoor venues during Winter- ie: DON'T! The other REALLY BIG thing to worry about outdoor venues, particularly for a musical, is SOUND!

(This rant may actually belong in the Tech Talk section, but it started here, so tough luck!)

The havoc that a stray gust of wind can wreak is intolerable, and most productions at the Quarry have been frought with this impediment. And this is the sort of venue where radio mics become a necessity- and again they're not exactly hassle-free, particularly when the receivers are stacked on top of each other by an unwitting producer. I have only heard successful sound operation and mixing at the Quarry Amphitheatre ONCE in my life- and that was from onstage through foldback monitors for a band I was playing bass for.

My vote would be to keep this show indoors where SOUND (the least considered of the tech disciplines- oddly, this applies mostly for musicals! GO FIGURE!) has at least a good chance of being controlled.

Eliot.
