RE: any theatre suitable

Hi Richard, The theatre at Murdoch University would be suitable, I would think, good audience capacity and great stage. Can't remember the name but Malcolm Crisp (Am I right?) would be the one to contact, look for his E-mail under "Gossip". Regards Sidsel (currently reading the ITA website from Norway)

RE: any theatre suitable

It is a matter of scale:

For a big show like this the stage will be the determining factor.

The Bridge theatre in Perth has a large stage and 800 seats, the Quarry Amphitheatre is an ideal outdoor venue with a 19m wide and 13.5m deep stage with 640 seats.
(www.quarry-amphitheatre.com.au ) and the Kwinana Amphitheatre has a 19m square stage with a 1000 seats. Obviously the outdoor venues are only viable in the summer !

Even the Maj or Playhouse would be worth contacting !

regards

Ian.

The perils of outdoor venues

Ian's right about the suitability of outdoor venues during Winter- ie: DON'T! The other REALLY BIG thing to worry about outdoor venues, particularly for a musical, is SOUND!

(This rant may actually belong in the Tech Talk section, but it started here, so tough luck!)

The havoc that a stray gust of wind can wreak is intolerable, and most productions at the Quarry have been frought with this impediment. And this is the sort of venue where radio mics become a necessity- and again they're not exactly hassle-free, particularly when the receivers are stacked on top of each other by an unwitting producer. I have only heard successful sound operation and mixing at the Quarry Amphitheatre ONCE in my life- and that was from onstage through foldback monitors for a band I was playing bass for.

My vote would be to keep this show indoors where SOUND (the least considered of the tech disciplines- oddly, this applies mostly for musicals! GO FIGURE!) has at least a good chance of being controlled.

RE: any theatre suitable

The Bridge is a good starting point as it is central, MLC in Claremont is worth a look as their rates are reasonable and they have most facilities, St Mary's is luxurious with all facilities but located in Karinyup. From a lighting perspective most large theatres out of the city centre only have 60 dimmer channels which restricts the lighting design on a reasonable budget.
John 23rd did Big last year and it looks ok with a young cast. You could use Stepping Out with a youth cast theme as an easy one to start with and tour it through several venues ?

Sorry, I couldn't let this one pass:

Most technicians I know can do very well indeed with something less than a reasonable budget! Designers however...

RE: The perils of outdoor venues

I am not sure when you last went to a show at the Quarry, but the gear there now is second to non, with delay stacks and digital effect and 6 in ear foldback systems for performers to use around the place.

In terms of big band sound, the outdoor venues are not suitable due to sound restrictions, but for stage musicals, technology has definately answered the call.
