Hi Everyone, I have moved to Melbourne from Auckland and have been checking out some of the threads on Agencies etc. Sounds like theres certainly a few scams out there [read NOTM and BMA]. Having had an agent in NZ, i know from experience that weeks can go by without hearing from them, you start to wonder whether they have forgotten about you so its time to give them a call etc. Is there anybody out there who markets themselves? I have been thinking about giving this a shot myself and figured I could send headshots and coverletters to all the local casting agents, has anyone tried this? Does it work? Or are there any casting directors out there who have been approached in this way, do you find it offensive or not useful? Let me know your thoughts Daniel

Its ESSENTIAL

Self Promotion is crucial in this industry - we are products and we want people to buy/hire us! You are selling yourself every time you meet anyone whether they are in the industry or not. This is a business and as much as talent is useful you will get nowhere without determination, good work ethic and some business nous. If you would like to get an up to date list of Casting Directors in Melbourne reply to me and I will give you the list I have put together over the years. I recently got back from NYC - where self promotion is huge. They send post cards to casting directors about once a month and tickets to their shows, reviews etc to them whenever relevant. It is not only accepted there but expected that you will have headshots, postcards, show reels, business cards etc, at hand and well and truly be putting them out there. I have an agent but every day I dedicate at least a couple of hours to researching, networking and keeping my details updated and out there. Then of course there is a lot to be said about the benefits of constantly training, that can also be an excellent way of networking! I got my first commercial through a casting director seeing me in a class. It’s the most rewarding job in the world at times and I wish you all the very best of luck!!
