Hi Everyone, I have moved to Melbourne from Auckland and have been checking out some of the threads on Agencies etc. Sounds like theres certainly a few scams out there [read NOTM and BMA]. Having had an agent in NZ, i know from experience that weeks can go by without hearing from them, you start to wonder whether they have forgotten about you so its time to give them a call etc. Is there anybody out there who markets themselves? I have been thinking about giving this a shot myself and figured I could send headshots and coverletters to all the local casting agents, has anyone tried this? Does it work? Or are there any casting directors out there who have been approached in this way, do you find it offensive or not useful? Let me know your thoughts Daniel

I don't think there is

I don't think there is anyone in this industry who doesn't self-promote. You don't get work otherwise. The Prompt Copy Networking emerging theatre professionals www.thepromptcopy.com Sticky Apple Legs http://stickyapplelegs.artsblogs.com Puppets in Melbourne www.freewebs.com/puppetsinmelbourne

Im all for self Promotion

I havent got an agent and I do it all myself. I might not get as many gigs that those with agents but I still get paid gigs and make connections. (Of course, being in Perth, everyone knows everyone :)) Go for it if you want to...just be prepared to do alot of foot work and not go as fast as everyone with agents. self promotion

For what it's worth, (considering I am not a pro and don't work in this industry), I agree with Na... if you look at your "profession" - even if you do it as a hobby and regardless of whether or not you are paid, if you consider it as you would any "business", then yes, you do have to market your business... in this case, you are marketing yourself whether it be as a singer, actor or combination... even if you have an agent, you are not the only one on his/her books and you can't rely on them to focus on marketing you 100%. If you do, you could be missing out on valuable opportunities and leads.

I'm thinking you would probably do well to be your own PR person if you can't afford to hire one :)

Sometimes, as uncomfortable as it may sit with you, you do have to blow your own horn - you don't have to do this in a conceited or arrogant way, but you do have to do it if you want to be noticed.

Have a look at websites of people in the industry and see how they blow their own horn and then copy them until you can blow your own horn in a way that feels comfortable to you... (that's assuming it might not sit comfortably with you...)

If you don't "market" or self promote yourself - how are those you want to attract even going to know you exist?

If you are polite and pleasant to deal with, you'll probably find the majority of people you contact will reciprocate and those that don't well, we're not all on the same step on the evolution ladder so don't take it personally... I believe developing a thick skin is almost a prerequisite for those wanting to work in the entertainment industry anyway... isn't it?

Good luck! :)

Bottom Line

Agent or no Agent, you need to self-promote. If you have an agent you Self-promote to then as well as anyone else. You plug away at plugging yourself regardless.

Having an agent just means that you MAY have a little exrtra support, as long as you nuture the relationship you have with them.

I say get the agent, after all it really doesn't change the amount of work you do, but you can get someone else to work for you too. Two heads are usually better than one.

Thanks for the plug Labrug!

Thanks for the plug Labrug! ;) I actually found - and this may sound naive - that promoting yourself doesn't necessarily have to be websites, agents, etc. Everybody will tell you to talk to everyone you meet. And that is the best advice. You don't have to hand out business cards, or push yourself into conversations, or 'schmooze' - you just have to chat to other people. Go to see shows, and then hang out with the cast and crew afterwards. Have a drink with them; discuss their show; then if you're interested in their work, tell them that if there are any roles going, you're available. You don't have to be overt in marketing yourself. Thanks for the response:-)

Thanks Everyone, I guess the question which I have given little thought to, is what constitutes self promotion. Definately, we all must be pro-asctive in looking for work. Theres plenty of people out there who are happy to say I'd like to be an actor/actress/singer/model but go out and do anything about it. Certainly we have to stick our ear to the ground and find out whats happening in the scene around us. I'm completely new to the world of Australian Film, TVC and Television auditions; I hear rumours that one should be paid for attending the above? I guess with respect to paid film and television work what I'd like to know is, firstly do all paid gigs in OZ get cast through casting agents and secondly has anyone been able to get regular auditions with casting agents without the assistance of their own agent? self-promotion

I constantly self-promote (For film scoring visit www.filmcomposer.com.au ) However, an agent may be required as some production companies etc might not want to deal with actors "off the street" or read your unsolicited mail. It is very much like the music industry. I suggest you find an agent (as they often have contacts) and promote yourself at the same time. Ad nauseum.

Through the Agent

On that topic, you are going the read and hear a lot of contradictory comments on this and to some degree, it will be dependant to level of self-promotion the client themsleves have done for for and toward the agent in question.

Not all "PAID GIGS" are cast through agencies, but the majority of the high-profile ones are. The bigger productions cannot afford the time or money mucking about with unknowns, so unless you have a self-proven track record and reputation to match, you won't get much by yourself other than a few extra bits here and there, in commercials, etc. After sometime, you hopefully would build up a network of contacts and things would be, may be different.

There are some agencies out there that sepcialise in the smaller parts (Commericals, Walk-ons, Background Extra, Supernumerary, etc) and I know of a few people who get regular jobs with such agencies. It pays well enough and it gets you out there and hopefully noticed.

If you want to aim for the bigger stuff earlier (you can't wait to make the break) than I would suggest locating the Casting Consultants in your area. These are the guys that production companies call on for casting assistance. They then consult the Casting Agents for hopeful talent. If you can get in at that level, you may stand a better chance. Again, you promote yourself to the Consultant in some way.

Some of these consultants may run their own Casting Agency which makes things a little easier - You still need to sell yourself and not just once. It is a constant thing. Other consultants may run workshop groups which is absolutely fantastic if you can afford it. They get to see you in action for several weeks on end! Most importantly, you have to convince these people about how committed you really are. Even if you feel committed and believe it in you heart, you have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt. There are hundreds if not thousands of hopefuls out there. Somehow you have to stand out from the rest of them, that means making a bigger noise about yourself than the next person.

Acting is not easy work, and neither is getting work as an actor.

BMA

Welcome to Melbouren BMA is not a scam - they are just a little out of the ordinary in the way they deal with thier clients (ie, they neve actually request to meet with u) but they are a legitimate agent. Good luck with finding an agent. And yes self-promotion is a good idea - If I knew how i would do it too. Mariabella Carlos

Its ESSENTIAL

Self Promotion is crucial in this industry - we are products and we want people to buy/hire us! You are selling yourself every time you meet anyone whether they are in the industry or not. This is a business and as much as talent is useful you will get nowhere without determination, good work ethic and some business nous. If you would like to get an up to date list of Casting Directors in Melbourne reply to me and I will give you the list I have put together over the years. I recently got back from NYC - where self promotion is huge. They send post cards to casting directors about once a month and tickets to their shows, reviews etc to them whenever relevant. It is not only accepted there but expected that you will have headshots, postcards, show reels, business cards etc, at hand and well and truly be putting them out there. I have an agent but every day I dedicate at least a couple of hours to researching, networking and keeping my details updated and out there. Then of course there is a lot to be said about the benefits of constantly training, that can also be an excellent way of networking! I got my first commercial through a casting director seeing me in a class. It’s the most rewarding job in the world at times and I wish you all the very best of luck!!
