Hello there - only having recently been interested in theatre and acting at 25, I'm now trying to decide where to start. I've had an extensive look around this site and still have no idea where to start . I was thinking of auditioning for some plays or student films but with having done no degree of acting before I was wandering if this was a good idea - maybe just to see if I WAS any good or not. But didn't know if this would be a waste of time or not.

Should I start auditioning straight away or perhaps doing a course .? which would be the better option . I was also wondering if anyone might be able to recommend an acting course in PERTH .. as I have no idea as to whats out there , maybe a course that one of you might have completed and felt was very beneficial to a beginner ..

Thank you for your time .

Re: A question: should....

If you're mainly concerned with doing acting for fun, rather than as a career path, training is probably not needed to start with - just get some experience in amateur/community shows. Keep your eyes out on this site for the audition notices of plays/musicals coming up in your area, and go along and try out.

Another thing you might like to do is go and *watch* some plays by your local groups, and then talk to the members (cast, crew, front of house staff) afterwards and let them know you're interested in getting involved in theatre. I don't know of any amateur/community group that isn't eager to bring in keen and enthusiastic people.

Well, that's my 2c from someone who purely got into acting for the fun of it. It ain't my job, but it's a good hobby :)

Do both. Really, there is nothing stopping you.

Can depend very much on what you are looking for. There are plenty of options. For TV Screen Acting, I would recommend the Screen Actors Workshop throught the Perth Actors Collective (http://www.screenworkshop.iinet.net.au/ ). However, many casting agencies will also hold their own courses and while their focus may vary, they are all useful and enjoyable.

For theatrical, there are plenty of options and to recommend one over another is very hard and quite unfair. Tafe based Summer Courses or Evening Classes can be quite fun and informative. Getting involved with a theatre group will get you good contacts. There is a theatrical group to cater for most if not all of Perth's Metro Suburbs. Check out local Community newspapers as sometimes courses will be advertised there. Also, check out the Auditions pages on this site. Some may think it an odd place, none-the-less quite a few courses are offered there.

While I say that there is a lot of choice, there are also a lot of cons too. Don't be too concerned about who or where, but do your homework also. There are some out there who would rather rip you off than help you out so tread with caution.

Personally, I found that getting involved in community theatre and doing everything I could was the best learning experience, but that's just me.......
