Where do I start?
Thu, 10 Jan 2002, 06:50 amI am 16 and I wnat very much to become an actress. I have no experience in drama as I never studied it at school but I do a subject called film and TV. I am in year 12 this year, and I hope to be accepted into a University but I am a bit reluctant due to my lack of experience. Any tips on courses or training or anything like that I can do before I apply to university would be great. Some one suggested TAFE but I am pretty clueless. As already said any tips would be really great!

RE: Where do I start?
Wed, 16 Jan 2002, 10:22 pmHi Hayley,
Its never too late to begin! A good place to start is to take up dancing and singing classes. The old favourites for dance are tap and jazz. They are still used today in the theatre.
As for acting, Tafe does run some short courses. It would help to know where you are, as in Melbourne we have the CAE which runs courses in many different things for people, and they have 4 acing courses I think.
The best thing you can do is try to get into any school plays this year and look around for amateur theatre companies. Quite often they will put on productions that need younger people in them.
Because you only have one year until uni, I would suggest finding yourself an acting teacher who can give you some crash course lessons in acting. When auditioning at uni for acting courses, they don't so much look for someone who is brilliant, as someone who shows promise and can take direction (simply that means you do a piece you have rehearsed, then they tell you to try a different way, and you show them you understand and can do it).
Do you have to go to uni next year? If you could wait an extra year, it would give you the breathing space needed to get some experience and absorb what you are learning. There is no rush for acting as it is a career that can span an entire lifetime. Often, a lot of the courses prefer to take people over 20 anyway, as they have life experience. I don't know your situation, but working for a year full time and studying dance, singing, acting etc can go along way toward a uni audition.
I hope this is helpful.
