I am not a makeup artist, but I suspect it's done the same way we did it at uni: for every performance, we'd buy new makeup. Not kits, but if we needed a different kind of say, eye shadow, then small packets would be bought. Those would be labelled (so we knew who was using what), and then kept for later use at the end of the show (ie. so that we didn't have to biy new makeup per student unless necessary). Of course, I studied at Swinburne and we had the makeup students (different course) help us at every major production, so it's likely I don't have the complete story on what occurs to the kits. I do recall distinctly though, having to pay out money at each production for new kits. (I tried to find my notes from uni, of which I've kept everything, but there appears to be none from makeup classes... hmm, wonder why that is...) If you've ever seen one of these kits, you'd know what I meant. The eyeshadows, etc, are actually very tiny, what you'd have in your purse if you were going out and didn't want to carry a lot. It means you can easily exchange used products for new. You must also remember that a makeup person would be charging for not just their services, but any expenses: which would include any purchases of products for their kits.
