Hi everyone, I am applying to WAAPA and NIDA (among other places) this year and was wondering if anyone here had auditioned and could tell me about the process? I know about how with NIDA there a 40 applicants and you get split into groups to perform, and how with WAAPA it's a one on one audition process, but has anyone made it to a call back? What questions do they ask you in the interview? Thanks in advance :)

NIDA is pretty basic, for acting and MT you split into two groups. You do your pieces and sit through aaaaalll the other pieces (not always bad, but sometimes horrific). Sometimes they will give you some direction, sometimes they won't. But this doesn't seem to change the call back results so don't stress if either way. They will often do a culling before lunch and if through then you may either do a third piece or if Tony night wants to see the piece you didn't do for him that will probably happen. If your going for the MT stream you will then sing something. Then they may do another culling before the end of the day, if your through again, they may ask you to prepare another piece or for MT you'll have your songs. Then you can relax for a day or two until the second call back where the same process will go on again, maybe a little more relaxed by this stage. They will do some improv work and maybe film something to take back for the other teachers to watch. They may do another culling here and again if your MT you might have to dance. Then they will do a one on one interview and talk about how prepared you are to get up and move and support and all that biz. They also may tell you at this point "thanks but please come back next year" oh also brush up on your Australian films that have been released this year. If you can watch a few. You'll find out why if you don't. And then you wait the excruciating month until you know. For WAAPA. I've never got as far but the previous comment seems to cover it well from what I have heard. Main point is that the atmosphere is very different because its a one on one with 2-3 of the course teachers. You'll do your monologues, or for MT sing your songs. Then you will sit down and they will ask you if you've come to support WAAP and seen any of the shows, if your from Perth and you haven't, its not a good start. Maybe give you the chance to come back for a recall. VCA used to be pretty much the same as NIDA, but with a bigger improv section. But the aren't auditioning in WA in 2011, and they have gone through some big changes in the last few years (but hopefully with the big lot of funding they recently got will be back up with the best) the only other thing I can say is the usual stuff. KNOW your pieces inside out, including the context in which they sit in the play the come from. Its such an obvious comment but it is so often forgotten..... And the results and hilarious, but not for the person performing. have fun
