Garrick 2009 Playwright Competition - Media Release
Thu, 8 Jan 2009, 12:04 pmSubmissions are open now for playwrights to enter their new one act plays for Garrick Theatre’s inaugural Playwright Competition.
Coordinators Bruce Denny and Melanie DeCull who are both experienced theatre practitioners with a background of over 30 years respectfully in all aspects of theatre, have worked intensively together with the Garrick Theatre in producing a fair process for the competition’s debut.
Denny says “it’s an exceptional opportunity to highlight new Australian works”.
“The Independent Theatre Association encourages new one act plays every year for their festival. With the Garrick Playwright Competition we expect to see an impressive array of submissions from the wealth of talent this country beholds.”
DeCull says “Playwrights will be thrilled with this news, they are always looking for outlets and directors for their work. Here they have the perfect opportunity to have their plays produced along with an experienced director allocated who will bring their vision to reality”.
“The theatre community is always looking for new and challenging plays to sink their teeth into, and patrons enjoy fresh and exciting seasons”.
A one act play is entirely that, a short play with no interval. If desired it may contain a few scenes however requires minimalistic scene changes. It must also contain two or more interacting characters.
The plays need to have an approximate running time between 20 and 45 minutes as per state one act festival rules. All submissions are required to be new works which have never been performed.
A reading panel will assess each production entered and ultimately choosing three winning entries of which will be produced for the Garrick One Act Season in August 2009. Some or all of the selected plays may be entered into the ITA State Drama Festival in Perth and Bunbury’s South West One Act Festival.
Submissions are open to all playwrights, including international with entries closing on Wednesday 3 June 2009. The three winning entries will be announced on Friday 3 July, with the formal celebrations and presentations taking place at the Garrick Theatre in Guildford on Saturday 11 July.
Interested playwrights will need to register by contacting Melanie DeCull ph (08) 9255 3336 or via email melaniedecull@tazentertainment.com.au to receive their information pack.
