Hi Sam,

Sun, 11 Jan 2009, 09:20 am

As a member of the  accused "panel of four" for last year I would like to offer an explanation.

As you stated yourself, you were able to see some 30 productions over the course of 2008, whereas myself and the other 3 adjudicators saw almost double that number. So you can no doubt see that there is a veritable smorgasbord of shows in Perth and that is the basis for the problem.

A long time ago (before I joined the ranks of the adjudicators) a points system was devised to try to keep things as simple as possible and it is this system that is used to "grade" the various productions seen.

Due to the sheer volume of productions across the board and the excellence of shows mounted in Perth and it's surrounding communities, there is frequently a two place decimal point between one "mark" and the next.

We, the "panel of four", are requested by the ITA to present them with a list that has a finite number of entrants, we have to draw the line at whatever figure they request. IE. "Top Ten whatevers or Top Five such and such" so, unfortunately, often a person/company that is not on the list of nominees is absent literally because of  a fraction of a point.

Drawing the required line is never an easy call for any of us, and that is why the results always boil down to pure mathematics.

As part of your interest and support of Community Theatre, I hope you will come along to The Lady Wardle Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 17th January, to see the spectacle that is "The Finley's" first hand.

Another way of showing your interest and support would be to  speak to the committee of the ITA and offer your services as an Adjudicator for 2010.

"Be nice to your Tech's - or they'll turn out the lights and go home!"
