Oops! Wrong button...

Look, as one of last years adjudicators, I would like to apologise on behalf of all four of us for your lack of nomination, but frankly, I'm not going to.

You see, the ITA has this policy about nominating anonymous actors, vocalists, directors .... well basically just anonymous people in general.

Try again next year as a real person instead of a "Wally".....

Oh, and for all that ARE coming to the Finleys ..... we are looking forward to a very exciting night of entertainment and celebrations.

See you all there!!

Nominations query

Who decides who gets nominated for each category? I was asked the question and I didn't know the answer.....
LabrugTue, 6 Jan 2009, 12:18 pm

Nominations

There is a panel of four Adjudicators, mostly volunteers who give up a substantial portion of their time to go to as many plays as possible including remote locations. There is a requirement that at least three must attend each show (as much as possible) and that they then cross-reference their thoughts based upon a structured scoring model.

With over 50 shows a year currently being submitted, I find it incredible that four adjudicators are enough!

Mostly volunteers? So the ones that aren't volunteers are paid?
LabrugTue, 6 Jan 2009, 12:38 pm

Misunderstood

You misunderstand me. I in no way implied that anyone was paid. They are not.

It was a tongue in cheek comment refering to the fact to some adjudicators in the past have probably been pleaded with to take on the job. It doesn't have many perks after all.

Then they're all volunteers

Then they're all volunteers then. "Mostly" implied one or two weren't. And if you're not a volunteer, then you're paid.

I don't think you are a volunteer if you are bullied blackmailed or otherwise coerced into doing the job. This is something that has to happen far too often. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

Symantic Enforcement

Thank you Logos. As the dictionary says...

volunteer  noun [C]
a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it

Note: Forced or paid - there's a choice here.

Now I know why I didn't get

Now I know why I didn't get nominated. Only two of the judges bothered to turn up tosee the play I was in. Phew :P I thought I was crap.

Light, Audio & other Techies nominations?

I thought there was a nominated Dogegories for lighting & audio?

There again I'm usually totally wrong! Or does those Techies work & design, become lumped under 'Sets' as the generalisation of the  'Mise en scene'? Which also could include or things such as make up, wigs or whatever [Even SM'S]- at a stretch!

Walter PlingeWed, 7 Jan 2009, 11:20 pm

It probably only took two

It probably only took two adjudicators to decide YOU WERE crap.

Whats sad is the fact that you need to express your adolescent opinions or comments when they really aren't necessary. Your thread has nothing to do with nominations either. Go outside and play little one. Congratulations to all the nominees.

would be great to have a lighting and sound nominations...as for SM's...if they are good no one will ever know if they were good or not. ;) Mitch

Tech awards

Generally things like lighting and sound are awarded with Adjudicators Certificates. Especially if there is something that was technically brilliant eg. eurobeat last year winning an adjudicators certificate for technical wizardry.
JoeMcThu, 8 Jan 2009, 08:34 pm

As I have never seen a

As I have never seen a 'Finley' award, I assume it is some sort of a gong in style?

If that be the case why just a certificate for techies?

I'm sure the adjudicators should be able to ascertain about SM's, or maybe the theatres should supply a copy of the Prompt book Bible or whatever.

Walter PlingeThu, 8 Jan 2009, 09:15 pm

Well maybe you could set up

Well maybe you could set up an award Joe, and provide a trust to give a $500 prize each year. As my old gran used to day, "don't whinge, get off your date and do something about it!"
JoeMcThu, 8 Jan 2009, 09:51 pm

I must agree with you

I must agree with you Walter Planchette, Iam a terrible pohmy slack  bludger & like a good winge!

Maybe I do need get to get off my R Send & do something about it, as I have nothing else much to do, of importance, in community theatre theses days.

I didn't realise that each of the dogegory winners get a $500 prize each year?

But I'm sure it would not be that difficult to organise a gold brick for each of the proposed techie sections!

jeffhansenThu, 8 Jan 2009, 11:03 pm

Maybe the Gaffer awards

Maybe the Gaffer awards we've discussed previously should be awarded in conjunction with the Finleys www.meltheco.org.au
Walter PlingeThu, 8 Jan 2009, 11:32 pm

Only the best play and

Only the best play and musical win the $500.

Who Judges and How?

I am new to Perth (been here for a year now) and have a been a lover of amatuer theatre for a while. I found this website around the time that Beauty and the Beast was on at the Regal late last year, and have been following it ever since! I discovered on this website that you have Awards for Community Theatre called the Finlays, which I think is excellent. I am please to say that I saw about 30 performances last year, both musicals and plays and I had seen 5 out of the 7 plays that were nominated for Best Choreography, and although I think that not all of the Chorus Line (Melville Theatre Group) performers were amazing dancers, I felt that this show deserved to be nominated for the Choreography. Not that I expect a response from the panel of 4, but I can't help but raise the question. "Why did this play not even make it into the nominations?" Sam
Walter PlingeSat, 10 Jan 2009, 04:56 pm

It could still be up for

It could still be up for best musical - nominations for best play and best musical are not announced beforehand. The winners are simply announced on the night.
Walter PlingeSat, 10 Jan 2009, 06:05 pm

To Samantha

There were 12 musicals entered, you saw 5 of a possible 12, which means there are 7 you didnt see, the panel of 4 see all of them, and as you have seen less than half I think it answers your question. Maybe the other 7 were of a better standard than A Chorus Line.
JoeMcSat, 10 Jan 2009, 10:11 pm

"Why do I need to get off

"Why do I need to get off my transom 'Wally! As this is some what an unbalanced situation , as others do not have to! But a play & musical get the 500 notes?

From your remarks;-

Well maybe you could set up an award Joe, and provide a trust to give a $500 prize each year."

I take it that techies are merely considered secondary by 'Aunty? &/or only afforded a "by the way" certificate, rather than an actual 'Finley Award' - [what ever form that may be?]. Which to me always sounds like an after thought or even an apology for not having an award category.

TaureanSun, 11 Jan 2009, 08:36 am

Erm gaafa,

Though not strictly speaking a "Finley Award". The trophy that Phoenix Theatre had on display on the ticket desk at the beginnings of it's life a few years ago in the original Memorial Hall (before it became a multicoloured arty-tectural statement) was given to Phoenix Theatre Group at the "Finley's" for being Perth's newest  theatre group.

Perhaps not THE Finley Award, but certainly one of it's relations.....

In any case, hope to see you at the ceremony for 2008's offerings.

"Be nice to your Tech's - or they'll turn out the lights and go home!"

TaureanSun, 11 Jan 2009, 09:20 am

Hi Sam,

As a member of the  accused "panel of four" for last year I would like to offer an explanation.

As you stated yourself, you were able to see some 30 productions over the course of 2008, whereas myself and the other 3 adjudicators saw almost double that number. So you can no doubt see that there is a veritable smorgasbord of shows in Perth and that is the basis for the problem.

A long time ago (before I joined the ranks of the adjudicators) a points system was devised to try to keep things as simple as possible and it is this system that is used to "grade" the various productions seen.

Due to the sheer volume of productions across the board and the excellence of shows mounted in Perth and it's surrounding communities, there is frequently a two place decimal point between one "mark" and the next.

We, the "panel of four", are requested by the ITA to present them with a list that has a finite number of entrants, we have to draw the line at whatever figure they request. IE. "Top Ten whatevers or Top Five such and such" so, unfortunately, often a person/company that is not on the list of nominees is absent literally because of  a fraction of a point.

Drawing the required line is never an easy call for any of us, and that is why the results always boil down to pure mathematics.

As part of your interest and support of Community Theatre, I hope you will come along to The Lady Wardle Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 17th January, to see the spectacle that is "The Finley's" first hand.

Another way of showing your interest and support would be to  speak to the committee of the ITA and offer your services as an Adjudicator for 2010.

"Be nice to your Tech's - or they'll turn out the lights and go home!"

Thomas StanleySun, 11 Jan 2009, 05:36 pm

Choreography

I must admit. I too was surprised that A Chorus Line was not in the top 7 that were nominated for best Choreography. I saw 4 of the 7 shows that were nominated (not entered) for a Finley and I think that the actual choreography of A Chorus Line was far more technical and stronger then that of the other 3(Bare, Peter Pan & Fame)that I saw. I understand that the judges may not have been looking at shows the same way as I did, But as someone that has many years of trained dancing experience and danced profesionally for 12 years, that is my opinion.
Walter PlingeMon, 12 Jan 2009, 12:16 am

But in the end it's the

But in the end it's the judges that the final say, like in the Tony, Academy and Grammy Awards, isn't it? As mention, sounds it's 0.1 or 0.2 that sees a production nominated or not. Perhaps you could volunteer to become a Finley adjudicator, given your broad experience?
LogosMon, 12 Jan 2009, 07:14 am

My thoughts

I do not live in WA but, may I suggest that if you do not like the nominations for these awards then volunteer to be a judge. I am sure that your help would be appreciated. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au
