Insurance question
Fri, 27 June 2008, 09:53 pmI'm hunting down some PL providers, and was wondering if anyone has bought a policy from
http://www.community-care.com.au/
I just went to do a quote, and it seems a bit strange to me that they accept payment straight away - submit a few details and you can pay immediately, without having anyone review it before hand. The site is recommended by an old community insurance thing run by the government, and I see it listed on another bunch of arts sites, but it does seem odd that there's no reviewing system.
Any recommendations/opinions?

They normally don't review
They normally don't review anything, until they are looking to avoid claim payments.
insurance Companies are in the business of hiring out umbrellas, until it looks like rain - then they take them back!
You can be sure they have crossed their i's & dotted their t's. By having generic rules of claim & exemptions, that one can almost guarantee, will void all and/or any claims.
It's purely a numbers game to them. unless you have given full & truthfully disclosure, so as not to increase their risk! Even down to what you had for breakfast, prior to taking it out. You'd be better off, whistling into the wind, witch could give more satisfaction!

Hate to disagree... but
Hate to disagree... but when buying insurance from Duck for Cover, and looking into other policies, I've always been asked to provide a brief summary of the activities, which is then reviewed. They also always ask if you've had any claims made on any other policies you've had, and I would assume that any responsible insurer double checks this before covering someone. Despite the generic-ness of the PL policy at the community site, I would expect them to be more interested in the details before people hand over their money.
There's a reason why some insurers refuse to cover fire-breathers, etc, as there is a higher risk than just plain old theatre. Duck for cover for instance, has a higher premium to be paid for anyone doing higher risk activities. Do I really want to be paying money to an insurer who takes my word for it?
It seems sus that's all. I've looked into a lot of insurers over the years and have never come across one where you could pay before a review.

That's good reasoning
That's good reasoning Na!
Ours is thru ACTA Aon brokers, in Melbourne or somewhere.
I can't remember beyond filling in the Name & address etc. the only perquisite was to be a member group of an affiliated Association. Beyond paying the fee, I don't think there was much else?
As you may have gathered, I lump insurance companies in the group as Used Car & second hand real estate dealers.

Problem is, I'm not an affiliated association, or whatever. I'm a sole trader, which tends to make me come under 'business' policies, despite the fact that I lose money, am not registered for GST, and am still a performance arts 'organisation'. Every time I look into insurance, it's about $2k per year, something I just can't afford.
Insurance in this country (for performance groups) is crap.

Although you are a Trader,
Although you are a Trader, as are a lot of Artisans, who also receive Government Grants. To cover things like PL & other incidental outgoings, such as Insurance in the Arts.
Wasn't there a Local Government Insurance scheme in Victoria, which they set up, as an umbrella coverage?
We have had something similar here in Cockburn, initiated by the City Council, that gives coverage under the area residents association supposedly. Which for our group is proving harder to access than rusted Chastity belt!

Yes, the local government
Yes, the local government insurance scheme was replaced by the link I gave above. It seems that the old one closed in '06/'07 and everyone is being forwarded from that scheme to these new insurers. I think I'll call AON on tomorrow and get a quote from them. I've also got some other insurers on my list, but from memory, they were pretty expensive anyway.
