A Boring Couple on a Boring Night.

Molly Kerr Smith

Thursday 3 November 2011

This is another scene written for the fun of writing. The characters, Freya and Timothy have been together for a long time and are used to the irritation that they cause each other. Freya has a very important meeting in the morning. She has to explain in front of the management committee the new phone system and software that the whole organisation is going to transfer to. She is hungry but has more important things to worry about. She really just wants Timothy to leave her alone. Timothy has worked all day pulling up a busy road and repaving it but has come home and seen the house is a mess. He has people coming around tomorrow night and so wants the place to be decent. He's quite hungry and knows that Freya finished work early today so isn't sure why she hasn't prepared anything. He isn't sure what to do with himself and thinks he would like some attention and affection from Freya but he knows he doesn't want to be stuck listening to her talk about work stuff.

FREYA is sitting at a desk writing notes for a work presentation. TIMOTHY is pottering around, tidying the couch, cleaning up after Freya. He pauses then bends down and picks up a rogue bra.

TIMOTHY

This doesn't belong here. Did you leave this here?

FREYA

She looks up, positively identifies it as her bra then shrugs.

Doesn't sound like me.

TIMOTHY

Right.

Freya continues to write and Timothy puts the bra away among a pile of shoes and jumpers etc. He goes offstage to the bedroom and returns empty handed.

TIMOTHY

What's for dinner?

FREYA

Whatever you want.

TIMOTHY

What are you going to make?

FREYA

I'm not making anything. I'm doing this. You can go and pick up some junk or you can make something.

TIMOTHY

Okay.

Timothy looks around purposelessly. He decides he can't be bothered cooking.

I think I'll go get something.

FREYA

Suit yourself.

TIMOTHY

Burgers and chips to share?

FREYA

Sure.

Timothy goes offstage to get dressed. He returns doing up a jacket.

TIMOTHY

I can't find my belt.

Freya

Do you need it to drive down the road?

TIMOTHY

Yeah.

FREYA

Your bedside, second drawer down, left of your boxers.

TIMOTHY

Thanks.

FREYA

No worries.

Timothy goes offstage.

TIMOTHY

It's not here!

FREYA

Have you checked the end of the bed?

TIMOTHY

Not there!

FREYA

Is it under the foot of the bed?

TIMOTHY

No?

FREYA

Where did you have it last?

Timothy

I took it off when we were on the couch!

FREYA

Then it will be down the side of the couch.

Timothy enters. Checks between couch and cushion. He produces a belt.

TIMOTHY

Found it!

FREYA

Congratulations.

TIMOTHY

Okay, I'll see you in fifteen.

FREYA

Okay.

Timothy kisses Freya. He exits. Freya returns to writing her notes. Her phone rings.

FREYA

Hello, Freya Dunsill speaking.(pause) Hi, Timmy. (pause) No, it's fine, what do you want? (pause) Whatever you want. Surprise me. (pause) Okay. Yep, that sounds great. Get that instead. (pause) No, it should be fine, we have drinks here. Oh, okay, if you really want to go ahead. (pause) Right. See you soon. No, Tim, I promise, it's alright, you're absolutely gorgeous. I love you, bye. (pause) I love you, too, bye.

Freya returns to her notes. There is a knock at the door. She gets up to answer it.

TIMOTHY

Hi, Baby.

FREYA

Where are your keys?

TIMOTHY

I left them here.

FREYA

fair enough.

Freya sits at her desk. Timothy pulls up a chair beside her and starts to serve some take away pasta. He starts eating. Freya gets up to get herself a drink.

TIMOTHY

Can I have a drink, too.

FREYA

What do you want?

TIMOTHY

Something fizzy.

FREYA

Okey dokey.

TIMOTHY

Thanks.

Freya exits then returns with a glass of water and can of fizzy drink. She gives the can to Timothy.

TIMOTHY

Thanks.

FREYA

You're welcome.

They eat their dinner.

TIMOTHY

How are you going with your presentation, Freya?

FREYA

Yeah, I'm getting there. Can I read what I've got so far?

TIMOTHY

Aaahm, do you have to?

FREYA

No...

TIMOTHY

Good. I was hoping I could watch the game.

FREYA

Fine.

TIMOTHY

Are you okay.

FREYA

No.

TIMOTHY

Why?

FREYA

Because you're an asshole.

TIMOTHY

No, I'm not. I'm absolutely gorgeous.

Freya looks at Timothy and cracks up laughing. She hugs him.

FREYA

Yes. That's true. you are absolutely gorgeous. Go on then. Take my container, too.

Timothy takes their containers offstage. She returns to writing. He enters and goes to the couch where he sits down to watch the game.
