volunteer work for the production side of theatre?

Hi,

I am 18 years old and have been accepted into the School of Contemporary Arts for painting at WAAPA but am also very interested in production and design and staging for the theatre. I would like to help out with amateur productions either in design or painting the set and creating props.

Could someone please tell me if amateur theatre companyÂ’s would offer me work or if they prefer people who have already studied this?

Of course this would be volunteer work (I would not expect to be paid!) as I would be happy just to be involved and gain some experience before I apply for the production and design course at WAAPA next year.

If any one knows what theatre companyÂ’s in W.A would consider taking me on could you let me know?
