Hello Josh

I assume you are from the ACT.

Have a look at the ALIA web site http://www.alia.com.au/ under EVENTS, they had an ALIA Lighting Training Expo - Melbourne 12th Sept
that will be touring the other capital cities.

Have a browse through the site, there was a discussion thread on what qualities a new lighting designer should have. You will need to register to view all forums but it is free.

Contact the lighting companies in your area and ask if you can get experience with them. You may have to move interstate to advance your tech skills

Join your local amateur theatre groups and get backstage experience so you can build up a cv and get referees. If this is not challenging enough, look for groups that push the envelope or suggest new ideas.

There are only a few choices if you want to get a tech degree, Sydney and Perth. There are plenty of Certificate level courses.

Posting on the ITA web site may not get you much success from employers as there are plenty walking in their front doors.

Try and go on the ALIA tours as they are an opportunity to discuss the lighting plan with the designer, you can learn a lot from this form of open classroom.

Hope that helps.

Don Allen
