Loan of follow spot
Sat, 3 July 2004, 09:14 amI belong to a group called Bullseye Productions, who do variety shows in conjunction with the ocean reef lions club, to raise funds for children with special needs, to buy equipment to assist them to walk, etc.
We do shows approx once/twice a month, and would like to enhance our production by using a follow spot to help light up some of the dark areas of our stage.
We use basic lighting equipment, and think it would help greatly, so we can follow singers through the audience etc.
If you could assist us in any way by lending, selling cheaply, giving, or putting us in touch with someone who has connections to get a basic follow spot, we would appreciate it greatly.
Thanks,
Graeme & Christine.
plz contact on above email or ring 9402 4675.
Thou errant dizzy-eyed maggot-pie!

Re: Loan of follow spot
Well, I don't have a followspot, however I have seen some small venues use a profile on a swivel mount instead.
A decent Source Four, maybe 575W or so, will only cost a couple of hundred, and will work as a substitue followspot for venues up to about 1-200 people.
Most Source Fours have a couple of handles at the back as well...

Check out www.alia.com.au, the Australian Lighting Industry Association. They have a forum where you can ask lighting people, as well as links to all the lighting companies.

HI CHRISTINE
BESIDE THE SOURCE 4 YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE TO CONSIDER A MUCH OLDER TYPE OF LIGHT BUT A VERY USEFUL ONE. IT IS A PATTERN 23. IT HAS A BUBBLE BODY AN LONG NOSE AND WAS USED AS A FOLLOWSPOT FOR SMALL VENUES. IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE IT AS A FOLLOWSPOT IT MAKES A GREAT FIXED SPOT LIGHT. IT IS ALSO VERY CHEAP AS THEY ARE ONLY AVAILABLE SECOND HAND FROM PROFESSIONAL AND AMATUER COMPANIES WISHING TO UPGRADE. STIRLING THEATRE CO HAD ONE BEFORE THEY MOVED TO THEIR NEW VENUE.

Re: Loan of follow spot
Adding to FionaÂ’s excelent suggestion! While your looking around for a Pat 23 with a Iris, to use as a Lime. If you are able to find a 23N type, which has an extended conicle shaped snout, housing for the lens & comes fitted with an operators handle at the rear - as a being the better option. There are still a number of these knocking about & I should imagine you will be able to get them for a song - they are not quite an antique as I believe they were first made in '47 - so probably more shaby chic!
Further because 'Strand' over engineered the lamps originaly, you can increase the wattage slightly, with the modern the lamp bubbles available these days!
Chookas Fiona.

Re: Loan of follow spot
Sincerest thanks to everyone that has posted their thoughts and suggestions to assist with our search. Christine and I now have several leads (and umpteen alternatives) to follow up on. Special thanks go to Don Allen and to David & Robyn Ashton for their invaluable assistance. It's great to see so many putting time aside to help a small charity group like ours.
Thank you all once again, I'm sure we will find what we are after now!
Graeme.
