INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE LIGHTING COURSE - PLAYLOVERS, WA

Playlovers are looking for lighting operators for their production of the popular musical “Grease” to be held at The Regal Theatre, Subiaco, WA in April. To encourage those who might be interested, we are going to run an ‘Introduction to Theatre Lighting’ course to train new lighting operators. You will learn all facets of theatre lighting as part of the course.

The course will run for three 3-hour sessions at PlayloversÂ’ normal venue which is located in Hackett Hall, Draper Street, Floreat, WA.

Playlovers members get to do the course for free For others, the cost will be joining Playlovers as a member, to cover insurance, and we would love to think that you would like to continue lighting at Playlovers to get experience. It costs $10 for juniors, $25 for single and $40 for double/family membership.

Don Allen, who will run the course, is the Lighting Director for the WA Gangshow and each year he trains a lighting crew for the show.

The course covers:
Stage safety.
Rigging safety.
Objectives of stage lighting.
Properties of light.
Electrical safety.
Basic lantern types.
Lighting angles.
Lighting desks – programming and use.
Power usage – watts.
Dimmer control.
Patching and cables.
Rigging a show.
Colours.
Special effects.
Basic stage lighting design.
Lighting plans.
Documentation.
Script analysis.
Square one rig.
Technical rehearsals.
Focussing.

All participants will receive a set of notes and a certificate of completion or excellence depending on their participation. You will need to wear suitable shoes such as joggers, preferably jeans and the black t-shirt is optional, but be prepared to get dusty. You will also do lantern maintenance such as testing and cleaning.

All who do the course will have an opportunity to / be required to work at the Regal on (some of the performances of) “Grease”. Additional support and training is available after doing the course.

As our timeframe is quite short, we need to get this off the ground very quickly. Please email (playlovers@redterra.net) or phone Marie on 9445 8626 with your availability so that we can schedule some days/evenings for the course.

Following are links to sites that have material that will be covered in the Basic Theatre Lighting workshops:
This site is an excellent set of notes for Theatre Lighting Design - Stage Lighting Design 101 by Bill Williams http://www.mts.net/~william5/index.htm

Go to this site for data on Strand Lighting which is a lot of the old lighting still found in community theatres - http://www.ex.ac.uk/drama/strand/

This is the Selecon site for their data sheets and details on the Pacific range - http://www.selecon.co.nz/

The ALIA Lighting Links page maintained by Andy Cidor is a good starting point as it provides links to all areas of Theatre Lighting - http://www.lighting-association.com/links/index.html

The LSC Maxim is an ideal lighting desk as I find it a lot easier to edit than Theatrelight or ESP2 - http://www.lsclighting.com.au/maXim.htm
