Tech work in oz
Wed, 6 Feb 2002, 03:54 amI'm currently a student in the UK and want to take a gap year before uni. I'm a member of a youth theatre and have been involved in many shows as sound/lighting/backstage/SM. Are there many jobs for such a person in australia and where are they geographically.

Hey Benjamin
There's not too many paid gigs around that you could just walk into unless you had a real primo CV. Heaps of amateur stuff, but generally, if they don't know you, you'll find it hard going to rely on the biz for a living

Just seen your note to Benjamin - I'm currently travelling through South east asia but will be arriving in Sydney April/May. I'm an experienced [10yrs] Theatre stage manager, mostly in DSM line but used to sub rep/repetoire turn arounds of large scale sets. I'm looking to travel in Australia but do have a work visa, so if funds run short will be looking for work - What do you do? Can you recommend any websites, periodicals or agencies that specialise in tech theatre jobs?

The best thing is to simply bash on the doors of the hire companies and venues. Most have websites, so bash on the electronic doors.
Jobs might be a little hard to find, but they are there.
