INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE LIGHTING COURSE
After seeing the results of the survey (thanks Grant) I will be starting an Introduction To Theatre Lighting Course at The Garrick Theatre which is located in Meadow Street, Guildford (behind the Town Hall) from Sunday 13 January 2002 and run for four consecutive Sunday afternoons if that suits the participants. The course will run from 1pm to 5pm.

Rehearsals for "Funny Lovin' That Theatre" also run on a Sunday afternoon from 12 to 4 pm but we are alowed to use the theatre and the bonus is we may have some live performers available.

The cost will be joining the Garrick Theatre as a member to cover insurance, and we would love to think that you would like to do lighting at the Garrick to get experience. It costs $8 for junior, $15 for single and $25 for double membership. Members get to do the course for free.

If you are in Scouting or Guiding then there is no cost as you will be covered by activity insurance but you need to bring along a signed activity form. You can also join the Garrick if you want as it is a great way to learn about the theatre. I am the Lighting Director for the WA Gangshow and each year we train a lighting crew. It may fit into your award scheme. Contact me for more details.

The course covers:
Stage safety.
Rigging safety.
Objectives of stage lighting.
Properties of light.
Electrical safety.
Basic lantern types.
Lighting angles.
Lighting desks – programming and use.
Power useage – watts.
Dimmer control.
Patching and cables.
Rigging a show.
Colours.
Special effects.
Basic stage lighting design.
Lighting plans.
Documentation.
Script analysis.
Square one rig.
Technical rehearsals.
Focussing.

The first Garrick production for 2002 is an outdoor cabaret directed by Jarrad West and the lighting is being done by Michael McCallum. We will look at this show and use it as an example when doing some of the practical work.

My speciality is dance so we will cover this as well as Drama. All participants will receive a set of notes and a certificate of completion or excellence depending on their participation. You will have to wear suitable shoes such as joggers, preferably jeans and the black t-shirt is optional, but be prepared to get dusty. We will also do lantern maintenance such as testing and cleaning. Spectators welclome but you cannot participate in the prac work unless covered by insurance.

Additional support and training is available after doing the course.

My home phone is 08 92751220 and home email is allen_DC@iprimus.com.au as I am on holidays for January.

For those that want to do an advanced lighting course let me know what you want to do, or what you have done so that we can extend your lighting skills.

RE: Basic Lighting Courses

Hello Charles
I am not very familiar with Sydney but can offer some suggestions.

My courses are free, apart from membership fees to cover insurance,as I want to encourage new lighting operators, designers etc and to give teenagers a chance at something different. Most take up acting after doing the course, as acting is more glamourous, but the lighting knowledge helps their acting and future directing.

TAFE in Sydney is running lighting courses for a fee, have a look at the Connections magazine website http://www.conpub.com.au/Training/traininglxall.htm.

I train youth members of Scouting and Guides via The Perth Gangshow, have a look for the NSW Gangshows via http://www.gangshow.com./, I assume Hornsby may be the closest, you will need to join as a youth member or become a registered helper and have a police clearance etc if you become involved as a non scouter.

There is a lot of theatre lighting on the web, the WAAPA site used to host the Kilowatt Lighting Links which now resides at http://www.lighting-association.com/links/index.html.

That will get you the theory, you need to aproach a reputable amateur theatre to get a mentor. If you give me your mailing address, I will send you a set of the TABS notes that we use.

Regards
Don
