Im currently looking purchasing a new lighting desk. I think that I will purchase a Strand 520i but havent been able to compare it to an ETC style of desk. If you have had compared the two desks I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Also, I need a cad style LX design software package. I have received information about the Vectorworks from www.ozcad.com.au, if anyone know a nice program thats easy to use and friendly to us in the theatre industry please email me: sclarke_riverside@parracity.nsw.gov.au

Follow this link to go to the ETC site for free downloads.http://www.etcconnect.com/html/freesoft.htm
St Mary's School (Karynup Perth)has an ETC250 desk that we used for the 2001 Gang Show. We needed two people to plot the show, one to concentrate on the deck and one on the design. The desk has several pages of scene masters to let you subgroup colour areas, chases etc to build up a scene but there is a lot of channel editing via the keyboard required. Overall its a desk, without any easy access to moving light control e.g.wheels. we used a seperate controller for moving lights.
Can't comment on Strand but they got a good write up in Connections.http://www.conpub.com.au/
The Australian riggers control is a MUST to go with the desk. See Connections Dec2000/Jan2001.
PS I am intersested in what you find out about usefull and affordable cad lx software. I still use my lighting stencils.

Sean and Don

I Dont have much to do with Strand desks but might be able to help with CAD Programs.

I use Vectorworks for my lighting plans at WAAPA, and it seems to be reasonably simple and effective to use. It is just pretty much a simple version of the CAD range of drafting programs. It has a built in function for theatre lumineres however, have yet to use them. If required I can provide a library of fixtuers.

One important thing is that you can import and export a DXF or DWX files.

How much are you willing to spend?

The latest drafting software in " professional use " is WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). The software is free to download from www.castlighting.com. However it costs about 2k for the dongle to save and print.

Have a gander.

All the best Aaron

If Chameleon are still agents for ETC in NSW can they arrange for a demo?

The link to stagetec contains some useful info on LX software packages as well as lots of useful tips:

Sean.
Have you ever heard of the LSC lighting company An Australian manufacturer (Melbourne) with an extremely good product. They have developed a new product 'The Maxim', state of the art technology with a number of features built in that are not provided by some of the othe manufacturers. There is a web site www.lsclighting.com.au take a look I think you would be very impressed.
