Value of Paid Ads?

The recent plugs here including special offers for visitors mentioning this site has got me thinking about something....

This question is targetted at smaller WA theatre companies using the West's theatre listing in Friday's paper.

I've got to say that the placement would seem to be indicative of the standing smaller theatre companies have with management at the West. (Do you think they could manage just one more article on the imported production of Earnest? I've seen four so far. Is this a newspaper or a not-so-glossy sales brochure???)

Whenever i've looked, the Friday theatre listing appears in the bottom right hand corner of a left hand page (not the arts page) - right down in the fold of the paper - the very last place anyone would look.

A recent ad that i ran for three exposures resulted in two calls to an alternative bookings number designed to gauge responses to the advertisements.

Has anyone else done any research into the cost effectiveness of this investment?

Where's George Dent these days? He's usually ready with suggestions for tackling local papers.
