========"There's so much good in the worst of us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it ill behoves any of us
to find fault with the rest of us."Piet Hein (sp ???)I not sure if this applies - sound good anyway!==========================As I have only witnessed one production of ŒO-Bus¹ and that was ŒOliver¹ - I can¹t really comment on all of their productions. As far as the Mise en scene is concerned, for this production. The sets - costumes - lighting designs where in my opinion pathetic.
They were not of the standard I would of expected and the price I paid to see it.The set was innovative, having worked on the JCW & Dury Lane productions, the use of scaffolding was obvious the safest way to go - but they could have dressed the pipes with something resembling stone or wood at the very least not just draped Hussein about. That bleeding door DSL and the fireplace DSR were a complete announce (even when it worked) and the coffin trolley obviously was cast out of a hospital in the 30's, from what I can remember of the show - As for the costumes WELL!, any community theatre could have dressed this out of their normal wardrobe, the footwear amazed me and was fashionable more for the last 20 years than London of that time - but that is being picky!
The lighting looked like a standard 'in-house' rig - 4 colour wash and a few specials - along with inappropriate management of the cues, they were either too slow or super fast - or just added for the sake of it - they did nothing to the show to gain that little bit extra, blackouts were virtually none existent - because of the sconce lighting from the orchestra pit, but that is just one of my pet peeves - While enjoy STARK Design, this was meagre in respects to what the punter should receive. But hey! - what do I know, I am just one of the bums on a seat - Who was convinced by the promotion, advertising and hoopla - that it was worth buying a ticket for me and my granddaughter.I have seen better from totally amateur theatres and I could have shouted a booking for at least 6 at a local community musical theatre. This was not well designed - it was CHEAP, CHEAP-CHURP & not even cost effective! - this is not the fault of any designers, implementers or operators.
As they would have been given the choice of their brief to be:-
1) Do it well.
2) Do it fast.
3) Do it cheap
( only the last two are to apply - in all cases)
I know - I have many ŒT¹ shirts for this!Joe 'less than average' McCabe
