LSC maXim Domino 48/96 Lighting Desks Wiping Memory !
Sat, 15 June 2013, 02:51 pmYou need to back up your desk after every plotting session if using 48/96 LSC desks.
I loaned my maXim XL 48/96 with PatPad to the Garrick for their last production Love is Noun and the operator complained that the show was not being saved. It had been used for the previous five productions without experiencing the same problem. I used the desk diagnostist to check the battery which was fully charged, saw the operator recording the 32 scenes correctly, then I made a stack for them, saved the show to floppy disk as it is an earlier serial number and showed them how to reload from disk.
The desk lost its stored show several times more after being switched off and was successfuly reloaded before the show started.
I checked the desk out after getting it back home, measured the batteries with a multimeter, fully charged after being switched off for over a week and checked all connectors.
The desk has since been out on another show without any problems.
This Known Buggs topic on the LSC Technical Support Forum may be applicable to my maXim XL desk as I do not have it to check the software version number. http://www.lsclighting.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=917
The Garrick have recently bought an LSC Domino desk, (wrong choice should have been a maXim! ) and although I had saved to usb during plotting, did not save the last two plotting sessions. I should not have got complacent. I turned the desk on yesterday afternoon and could not find any saved show scenes or Cue List (stack to maXim users). I then recorded a scene to C9 - 1, confirmed it was recorded with C9-1 fader, then turned the desk off. After five minutes turned the desk on and saw the scrolling led display informing me that the desk had just completed a complete desk reset! instead on the usual boot up message of software version number. Confirmed that C9-1 was empty.
Turned the desk off for five minutes, recorded a scene under C9-18, confirmed it was recorded with C9-18 fader, then turned the desk off. After five minutes turned the desk on and saw the scrolling led display informing me that the desk had just booted up normally with the usual boot up message of software version number. Confirmed that C9-18 was still there.
Rang LSC tech support and they said the desk may have run out of memory. I had 65 scenes stored in the C bank, one Cue list stored in the C5-18 memory and about 34 scenes stored in B1.
The specs for the maXim XL are 594 scenes, 594 stacks 594 chases. http://www.lsclighting.com/products/consoles/maxim-console so it should not have been aproblem.
Make sure you BACKUP after every plotting session and have the backup available for reload before shows. It may pay to have a second backup in a secure location as thumb drives are unmarked and easily lost.

Probably very sound advice
Probably very sound advice for any desk. Our old Jands doesn't have the facility to back up - it's a bit old for that. We had the misfortune (or rather, poor maintenance) to have the battery go flat, losing all our data. Luckily it was not during a run.
Maybe time to upgrade to something with backup facilities?

Desk Resets
I have been informed that corrupt show files can cause desk resets.
