Hello there, I'm Steve, I'm a theatre technician from Nottingham; England! I am hoping to be taking a 6 month working holiday to Australia from June 2012 and was wondering about the possibilities of getting any kind of technical work in any kind of theatre while I'm there! I'm very flexible and have had experience of all manner of Theatre and Stage working practices! Can anyone help? Point me in the right direction, give me ideas, websites to look at, people to email and make a nuisance of myself to so I can get some work? Any ideas, hints and advice would be very much appreciated! Many Thanx Steve

G'day Steve!

G'day Steve!

I feel you get more work in theatre on the east coast, rather than in here in the west, as there is more proeatre  happening there, on the other side of the 'rabbit proof' fence.

Also one of the first things pohms notice is the vast distances here between anywhere, as compaired to the ol' dart {England}. I was born a geordie on Tynesdie & have been here since 1960. I'm still  only a pohmy ba'tard, that never had the operation to become an occer.

If you can image that Perth to Sydney is about as far as from London as itis to Moscow, that might give you a clue.

Proeatre is still primarily Melbourne [VIC] followed closely by Sydney [NSW],  Adelaide {SA] & the  Gold Coast [Queensland].

In the East it is or was fairly easy to pick up work as initialy part of a bump in/out crew on a casual basis. If you are a qualified sparky bring your indeture papers & whatever, because you would need to be licenced to carry out electrical work, especialy in WA, SA & Queensland. From experience in theatre in the other states they tended to be a wee bit slacker. [but that might have changed since I was over there working in theatre years ago). However others on the forum would be able to throw a lot more light on this, as I know Jeff Hanson is a Licenced Sparky {Electrical Contractor} & I believe also that Logos is as well.  Along with I'm sure a few others on the forum.

East coast I'm afraid

East coast it is, as Joe Mc says above. You might also hit the web and check out the various Fringe sites. I can never remember when the Melbourne Fringe is but Adelaide is on in Feb/March. Do read the FAQ (Na's given it above). Might be worth getting onto the MEAA too, they have a website, you might get some reciprocal rights for your Equity membership? We can't offer a bed but if you get to Adelaide drop us a PM. I honestly don't recommend you come here, unless it's for a festival or tour, but if you score a temp job at the Festival Centre (see their website) it might be worth it. We have some very nice vineyards and brews! Google is your friend...break your bubbles!
