Don't know any offhand, but

Don't know any offhand, but I'd try contacting people like Whitehorse Musical Theatre, Camberwell Theatre Co... I believe there's a few amateur groups in Hawthorn/Kew, Doncaster, etc. Even if they don't have a contact for a local set building company, they'd most likely have people willing to volunteer to help build one. Jocob why not build your own?

Jocob why don't your ameatre group build thier own, rather than hiring in?

Thanks for your replies

Thanks for your replies guys. It's actually a school musical so there are quite a few limitations in regards to building our own, and due to the size of the set/ difficulty of it and the amount of time we have to get it in and up later in the year as well as space to build it. We figured that the easiest and fastest option would be to get someone outside to build it, however we may return to the idea of having it built by ourselves if we find people with the skills and time on premises. Thanks

Again, your best bet is to

Again, your best bet is to contact a local amateur group. I have no doubt that there'd be some old hands in one of them that would be happy to come down and build a set for a local school. Have you done the obvious? Asked parents who might be interested in holding a hammer or two? I know a lot of times schools ask the parents to do a bit of a volunteer build to get things done. And as an alternative, maybe rethink your set. If you can't build it yourselves, don't have space to build it (and presumably store it for future use), have budget limitations (a company that builds sets for a living would charge a fortune compared to the school production budget)... then why trying in the first place? Do something a little less demanding. (I say this with all due respect. I remember my school shows and the sets were often between crazy and small. I also attended a private school, where the set builders were maintenance staff with us students helping out) Your source for handmade shadow puppets at Puppets in Melbourne

As Na suggested Jacob!

Also have a think about cardboard sets such as; http://cortecscenery.com/photologue/gallery/cortec-gallery/

I'm sure your student could manage to cobble together suitable sets with cardbvoard 'n sticky tape.

Or her other suggestion of choosing a less complicated show, possibly done in Black soft hangings. With a few mise en scene set pieces, which allows the punters to use thier imaginations & suspend disbelief.
