Silent moving lights feedback?
Sun, 19 Apr 2009, 09:29 pmI've been using moving lights for a while now with mixed results, the common complaint is that the fan and movement noise are too distracting, but there are now virtually silent units available and so I have bought some.Is there a demand for these in the drama/dance world?

I saw a show in a smallish
I saw a show in a smallish theatre, where the noise from the lights during the quiet times was quite distracting. Can't say there is room in the budget at my little theatre though.

trial
If you have a suitable show I can offer you very low price to trial them, incidentally they are TH, the same colour temperature as your theatre lights, so they blend in, they also have a zoom range of 5-60 degrees, which opens some interesting effects. If you then like them you can tell the world and if not, you can shut up.

Hi David,
Hi David,

Cheers

Ive had only a few
Ive had only a few instances when there has been a complaint regarding the fan noise coming from moving heads, and it has usually been the sound designer who complains!
With all the other noises going on in a theatre - scrollers, air con vents, outside traffic, stage manager whispers and the performers, I've found the fans just blend in with everything to a point where they are almost a 'part of the silence'. I imagine TV studios would have a bigger issue with this. Som fixtures have a function to regulate the fan speed and make them quieter, which is nice.
Are these Vari*lites by any chance? 5 - 60 degrees? Wow! I thought the VL3500s were the only ones that did that!

I'm just got some Clay Paky
I'm just got some Clay Paky 1200 TH and they are5-50 degrees and a 1000, which is similar and looking at the SmartMac and TW1, but I need the lowest cost units that will do the job as my customers are "cost sensitive", [American euphemism]
And my clients are very definite about noise.Vari are hugely expensive and how they will travel as a division of Barco is uncertain.
