Have a search on The Blue

Have a search on The Blue Room, http://www.blue-room.org.uk/ (hints, read before you leap, be nice and type accurately and you will get a lot of help). Answers include Google 3D Sketchup http://sketchup.google.com/ which is free and even does fog! It is not a dedicated lighting program. You could also do a search on ALIA forums http://www.alia.com.au/

Programs

You might want to check out recommendations at www.alia.com.au or in the CX magazine: http://www.juliusmedia.com/cxweb/ Additionally, maybe someone out there offers discounts for schools. Finger puppets now on sale at Puppets in Melbourne

Free Student Lighting CAD programs

Vectorworks can be accessed free as a student see http://www.nemetschek.net/student/software_application.php and Microlux have a free version that restricts you to 2D, older libraries and has a watermark in the centre of the drawing. http://www.luxart.com/

I've been using a cracked

I've been using a cracked version of WYSIWYG for a couple of years now. The education version is quite cheap. It's a far more sophisticated bit of kit than Vectorworks and has excellent 3D capabilities.I tend to work on the set and the building in Vectorworks, then export it into WYSIWYG to do the lighting.
