Musical for First Time Director

I am looking to make my debut as a director in early 2010 for a small amateur theatre organisation in Adelaide. The company produces musicals and I am looking at thoughts on which musical would be suitable for a first time director. I will have heaps of support from very experienced Choreographers and Musical Directors. I would like to do something that is reasonably popular/well known. Having said that, I would also like to do something different. Cast size is not an issue. The theatre is small and has no fly capabilities, so any sets etc would need to be set and manipulated on stage. There is the option to perform on approx 1 m of stage in front of the pro arch. Any ideas?

Hi Buzz I'm in Adelaide, are you talking about the theatre at Stirling? Haven't worked that one. Anyway, in summary you need a musical with easy set options but the cast size isn't restricted, except, presumably, by the fact you can only put so many people onto a small stage. Why not stick your neck out and do Man of La Mancha? Time for a revival I think! One set, ensemble cast. Don't think Brigadoon's been done for a while either. Kismet perhaps?? Something more modern, Nine, Snoopy? Hmm, will give this some more thought. "Life is too short to stuff a mushroom"
