Student coming to Australia for three months....
Tue, 27 Nov 2007, 12:15 amHello,
I'm getting an early start on my summer plans, and I'm considering coming to Australia to gain more theatrical experience. I'm currently a Theater Design/Technology major in Boston, MA, but would like to expand my theatrical experiences as much as possible, especially while I'm in school. My question is: what is the best way to find a job for three months? I'd be coming to Australia from mid-May to late August. I have a lot of lighting experience, as it's my concentration at school, and plenty of props experience as well. I've looked at the ALIA website and this website, and found them very helpful.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

You should give us more info: it's hard to give you good advice if we don't know where in Australia you'll be. This is a large country, and the industry differs greatly depending on what city/state you're in.
My best advice is to contact people on the ALIA forums, since they'll have more information about current jobs. You should check out whether you need any certificates to do lighting.
Depending on where you are as well, you may have more opportunities - there's more on in Melb. during Sept/Oct than most of the rest of the year, for instance.
Another thing you should do is check the Arts Hub jobs feed in the news section on this site. They collate pretty much all of the advertised arts jobs in the country.

Thanks!
thanks for the reply!
I will definitely look on artshub. It sounds like it will be my best bet. I'm going to go check out APACA too. I've looked at the ALIA forums a little, but I'll be sure to read through more of that as well.
As for more information, my trip can be very flexible. The program that I plan on coming to Australia with allows us to fly into Sydney or Melbourne and go anywhere from there. I can travel as much as I want, so if I have trouble finding work I'm free to pick up and move.
Thanks again,
~Julie

The trouble is, most people
The trouble is, most people who will be willing to offer you work, will want to know what city you will be in.
Melbourne I think would be more flexible, as there is a lot more fringe venues here, and as I said, the Sept/Oct period and a little before it is busy - there is the Melbourne Fringe Festival on in Sept, and then the Melb. Int. Arts Fest. after it.
I don't know much about the Sydney scene, but I'm sure if you look there might be work available.
