I am the Tech Director of NEO Production's version of tick, tick...BOOM! and our set designer has requested four screens (1.5m width 2.5m high) made out of what he calls "material that when you back light it it becomes almost transparent, and when you front light it it is almost opaque," which is what I call "scrim." So I am looking to buy enough of this material to make these four screens. I have discovered that to buy actual scrim costs a fortune, does anyone know a budget alternative?

Thanks all!

Cheers,

I'm sure someone at the forums at ALIA (www.alia.com.au, the lighting industry association) has posted on this very question recently. You may want to try checking there, as they always have some very good ideas. where are you, this will help with suggestions, be very aware of using non fire-retarded cloth. The sizes you want may not be that expensive as they are essentially off-cuts, if you are in Perth we can give you a quote.

If you want it to be 1500mm

If you want it to be 1500mm wide, fabric is sold in two widths, 115cm and less common 150cm. So you could probably find something at spotlight. Problems would be that it is flammable, and if you were putting it on frames it wouldn't fit.
