Plan to ban incandescant lamps
Fri, 23 Mar 2007, 12:41 pmHas anyone heard anything about a plan to ban incandescent lamps and replace them by law with Low voltage flouro's. How to play merry hell with the theatre and film industry. And I have a few old toys st home that I dearly love that simply will not work with the CFL lamps. Considering that household use of incandescents accounts for such a small part of the electricity use it would seem to be akin to putting out someones barbeque and ignoring the bushfire next door. Cooling and heating burn a hell of a lot more power.

I have heard that there
I have heard that there were hopes to replace all the household lightbulbs, but I haven't heard of any plans to replace workplace ones... But then, that's about all I know about the topic :puzzled:

Halogen
While they are planning to phase of standard bulbs used in office and home lighting, there is no discussion around high powered lighting such as halogen globes. I would assume that there would be exclusions to the policy (there always is) and that professional industries would be making themselves heard.

GLS lamp ban.
Have a look at this post http://www.theatre.asn.au/billboard_bulletins/dimmable_lamps
Compact Flourescent lamps are not low voltage, they are mains voltage.
There are low voltage flourescent lamps for camping.

Oops
Yeah Typo, I actually meant to say low wattage. Thanks for the reference to the other thread I missed that one somehow.
Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

incandescent lamps
Having spent the last 15 years working as a lighting consultant and designer in London I can be pretty sure the domestic light bulb issue will not cross the theatre boarder. In the UK and most of the European Union laws are in place which affect all commercial buildings and although the tungsten lamp is not banned they work on a Lumen/Watt measurement. This means that you must achieve 50 lumens for every circuit watt of power you consume (L/W). An incandescent lamp only achieves around 20L/W. As a fluorescent can achieve over 70L/W you make saving in one place so you can use less efficient lamps in others. This way it still averages out at 50L/W across the site. In theatres the stage lighting is exempt as no other source can be dimmed so well. However, outside the auditorium the rules apply.
