hi everyone...

of the people who auditioned for MT at waapa and received callbacks but were unsuccessful in the end, what are you doing with yourself now in terms of gaining experience? singing classes? dancing? And if so, who with? also, are you getting roles in productions?

cheers,
A

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

I didn't get into WAAPA after auditioning once in 2000. I have since worked here and in the UK in large music theatre productions. I don't want to diss the place at all because some exceedingly talented people have been there, and some of them are my friends. It has to be said though that those people had talent before they arrived-it was noticed and nurtured. Lots of talented people don't go to WAAPA. Lots of untalented people also don't go to WAAPA but if you have talent it can be nurtured anyway-it just takes a little while longer but sometimes that path can be just as interesting and , maybe, a little more unique. We have to get past thinking WAAPA is the only way to become successful. It comes with no gurarantees either.

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

I moved in with WAAPA people so I am basically amongst it all anyway. I'm also doing ballet and Jazz classes as well as the usual singing lessons and shows. (you must all come see Seussical in April!)

I've given myself until the age of 25 (so like one more year) before I get over it and get on with my career. I'm too fucking old to spend another three years at uni after that.

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

Hi

I understand how alot of people want to get into waapa and nida but if you dont you just have to keep on plugging away. I did not go to either but I still managed to get into professional musicals in Australia and the West End. When I auditioned for these musicals they never asked me where I studied dance, singing or drama they paid attention to the talents. So go for it keep up the classes, dont stick to one studio only try and attend a variety of classes with differen teachers.

Remember we do this for the love of it and if it does not happen when your young it could happen later on down the line. Alot of productions on the Westend cast people 30+ especially in productions such as Chicago, Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Superstar. I know because most of the people I worked with on the Westend are over 35 still dancing, singing and still reaching for the stars.

It's a shame our Australian directors/producers in the musical world don't take a leaf out of the UK conterparts to employ people who are older.

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

It's so great that people over that age are still singing and dancing. I'm 18 and just got accepted into WAAPA....cert 2 MT. So many of my friends were saying, " what are you gonna do if u dont get into wappa" or things like that. It gets annoying how ppl think that waapa is the end of the line in WA. Everyone knows that there's hardly any work in Perth, but they don't think much bigger then where they are. Opportunities are endless if they set their minds to something. Like you said, we do this coz we love it.

I'm not in this for the money or fame, but then again, im not dismissing it. haha. i'd love to be doing this when im 30 - 40 yrs old. I never plan to stop performing. i've been performing for nearly 10 yrs now.

anyways, i've said enough now. congrats on performing on the west end.

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

W.A.P.P.A is not the be all and all of performing there is great reputable companies out there that train and have contacts and provide great opportunities for young people;

Brent Street, La Salle, Sunshine Arts, The Entertainment Factory, Nida,

there is about seven really good ones in Australia and abroad who have nationally recognised qualifications that are worth checking out that maybe you're right for!

A freind of mine is going to Brent Street this year I know someone from the Sunshine Arts that says it's great training and I got into the Advanced Diploma at The Ent Fac that starts end of March. There is heaps you just have to look!!!

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

Depends what you want out of a course. I went to Brent Street, I can dance very well but when I go to auditions I am up against pretty strong actors and singers. Although it was great at BS I am now studying full time singing and acting. If you want a career in MT you need the strength in all areas but acting and singing to me is most important.

Thats what I have found anyway. Others may not have.

Do whats right for you, the areas you are interested in but beware the casting agents in Sydney are looking for stronger acting and singing.

In WA I am not familiar with any other course Im sorry.

Hey SL my friends sister started at WAAPA last week in the Cert 2 MT.

If your in Perth I recommend you do the WAAPA mid year course which goes for a week. My friend did it last year and loved it.

Re: People who got WAAPA callbacks

I see everyones point and i agree however i think every1 should keep there options open, this year im doing cert 2 in MT as well and im planning to audition for batchelor at the end of the year. Although i'd love 2 get in, im keeping my options open. At the same time as WAAPA, im also studying a part time journalism course, which i don't love as much as music theatre, but its still great fun and interesting. the way i see it, your voice is your instrument and if anything should happen, its important to always have a back-up. WAAPA is not everything, its just one of many great training courses. I wish everyone goodluck with this year and the future!!
