I'm considering doing the part time musical theatre course at Stage Door School in Subiaco (Perth) next year. Anyone completed this course before and if so, was it a worthwhile investment? It's going to be quite costly as you are required to have a singing lesson every week on top of the course. I hear their students have quite a good record in WAAPA success.
BryceTue, 27 Dec 2005, 01:35 pm Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Hey aeva, My partner danced there all this year and to be honest i wouldn't go there. I just felt talking to him, that the cost of the place very much out weigh what u get from them, Also i did feel they were a bit Money grabbing, times when performances were on they wanted more $ for other costumes and stuff. But i have to say, I have never been there, so take this advice as you will...

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
I do agree with Pan, when I went there I found exactly the same thing. I don't like to bad mouth so all I'll say is, I myself wouldn't go there.

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Agree with you Pan. And also Dance Factory Melb is $1800 plus per term as is Brent Street NSW. Dont get me wrong I am not knocking Stage Door but they all sound the same. Unless you get hecs or vet subsidy you pay heaps.
Aeva if thats the best Perth has, go for it, if it gets you where you want to go, such as WAAPA do what you have too. Like Pan I dont know the place but it just seems the same in every state. You pay through the nose to get what you want. Sometimes doing a year of dance will be a benefit but your paying for it. Its up to you and it depends what you want. On the web Stage Door looks a great place.
hope that makes sense

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
I totally agree with the above messages. In my opinion the music theatre course is not worth doing at stage door. It is very expensive and you could get the same training elsewhere. The dance classes are quite good so maybe you should consider doing purely dance classes and continue/start private singing lessons somewhere else. I have completed a course at stage door and felt I didn't get what I paid for. I don't often bag schools around Perth and whilst I feel stage door provide very good dance training, the other classes left much to be desired. Save yourself the money.
Re: Singing Lessons In Perth (Musical Theatre style)
Thanks everyone for your advice.
With regards singing lessons in Perth (musical theatre style) any suggestions?
BryceTue, 27 Dec 2005, 08:30 pm Re: Singing Lessons In Perth (Musical Theatre style)
Rachel Bradshaw!!!! She's a champ...
SophWed, 28 Dec 2005, 07:20 am Re: Singing Lessons In Perth (Musical Theatre style)
Pan,
Is she someone who is recommended by WAAPA. I am in the MT CERT course and need to find a singing teacher too.
SophWed, 28 Dec 2005, 07:24 am Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Candy, is it worth going there for casual dance classes. I am looking for a good school to keep up my skills. I've been reading John Cleary, Stage Door, Jodi Marshall are the best schools but coming from Adelaide I have no idea.
Any recommendation.

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Rachel was a teacher at Waapa, but has semi retired ( not that she's really that old) Sophie wait till u find out who they recommend, they might like u to have someone who's at Waapa now. Rachel is kinda no Noncence get down to work kinda teacher... i loved her!

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Yes they are worth going to just for dance. Although Jodi Marshall is also good. It depends on what style and how strong a dance background you have. Stage door are more friendly and deal in a more theatrical way. They do ISTD dance syllabus and exams but theres no pressure and the tachers are lovely (the dance teachers only). Jodi Marshall is more for people who have been dancing since they could walk. A little bit bitchy and showy, but thats what some poeple are used to. Hope this helps.
SophWed, 28 Dec 2005, 11:37 am Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Thanks Candy. From your reply I fit into the Jodi Marshall category- I have been dancing since 2yo in jazz, tap, theatrical. Have done contemporary and classical but I prefer theatrical. The dance school I went to was high standard competing in national comps.
Given that the dance teachers are friendly at Stage door do you think it would be challenging enough for me.
I suppose I should try out a few and get a feel.

Re: Singing Lessons In Perth (Musical Theatre style)
Rachel's surname is actually Brayshaw (not Bradshaw) in case you are trying to look her up.

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
There seem to be a lot of "Music Theatre" courses popping up around the place... Quite honestly, if a course isn't fully accredited, I would be wary of it. With these courses, the course cost quoted does not usually include other costs you are expected to cover (costuming, extra lessons outside of the course, accompanists, etc). You may find that the ACTUAL cost of doing the course is equal to (or greater than) the cost of just doing independent singing, acting and dance lessons. Also, if the course is time consuming, but not fully accredited, you will not be able to work much, and will also not be able to get any study assistance. Remember, the time and money you shell out for this course is essentially paying for that bit of paper you get at the end. And unfortunately no-one in the industry is going to be impressed with a course that hasn't been accredited.
Walter PlingeWed, 28 Dec 2005, 05:31 pm
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Quite right * and I'm quite sure that most of the courses that are popping up aren't accredited, so yes you will get the training but is it worth the heap of $ you will be shelling out?

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Hey guys,
There's a school called W.A Academy of Dance and Drama doing full time diploma courses. It's worth checking out and has just been accredited! Hope this helps!!!
Walter PlingeThu, 29 Dec 2005, 04:36 pm
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
actually this school, WA Academy of Dance and Drama is now called "the entertainment factory" but yes i believe it is accredited...
Walter PlingeThu, 29 Dec 2005, 06:10 pm
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Ohh,
Is the W.A academy of Dance and Drama or as it's now called-"Entertainment factory" still in Balcatta??
JulianMon, 2 Jan 2006, 09:51 pm Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Phil talbot teaches the dancing at Stage Door, and its ISTD for the modern jazz. I've been going there fora bout 3 years, and Phil is an exceptional teacher, and knows what he is talking about. If it's dancing- he's an excellent teacher.
Jodie Marshall's is a good dance school too. Nikki is a great teacher as well as the others.
I guess it's simply 'trial and error'
I recommend, you get a private singing teacher who knows what is expected for the Wappa auditions or whatever you wish, a seperate dance school, and acting...unless you know exactly what you want...i find it quite better that way...
Graet singing teachers are...(no order)
Sonya Plummer (or Sonya D'anne)
Rachel Brayshaw,
Ian Westrip
Paul Peacock
Rhoda Lopez
Andrea Gore
theres many more i have missed or simply cant remeber their names...but look up these people...
some are costly...some are not...

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
hey,
I'm looking for a singing teacher - and I was wondering how I could get in contact with these teachers you mentioned? I've looked in the yellow pages but it hasn't been helpful...
Thanks.

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Try Libby Hammer... she gives singing lessons and you can find her in the White Pages Online.
LanaWed, 4 Jan 2006, 08:07 am Acting Schools
Hey!
I'm looking for a good acting school in WA, any suggestions?
Walter PlingeWed, 4 Jan 2006, 09:13 am
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Hey.
I don't know what everyone else thinks of Stage Door.....but last year I did the full time musical theatre course. Ian Westrip is the head of S.D. He will be your singing teacher. Phil Talbot is the dance teacher and you'll have a few acting teachers.
I'll say honestly, it is a very un-organised course. The dance classes are great...you'll improve in your singing as I did....and although some of the people can be up-themselves...the classes help and if you're willing the spend a couple of grand then yeah, go for it. Don't hesitate. Sign up for the course.
Simon
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Hi Simon, thanks for the info. Could you explain what you mean by "unorganised"? Do you mean the classes themselves, or the teachers in general? Also, is it the teachers who are up themselves or the ofhter students? Thanks!

Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
avea, you only looking for part time??
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Lukey, yeah only part time. I'm currently working full-time during the week. I'd really like to get into musicals... even if it's amateur. The catch 22 is when you go for auditions they like some sort of experience, but the whole idea of auditioning for these musicals IS for the experience!!
Got callbacks for the MT course at WAAPA 2 years in a row so I guess that's a good sign.
I've done separate singing lessons and dancing in the past.
What I'd really like is a musical theatre part time course which encompasses singing, dancing and acting. The Stage Door part time musical theatre course seems a bit on the expensive side for only an 11 week course. Did the maths, and the fee is pretty much equivalent to a whole year at WAAPA! So I just thought I'd ask around.
Any advice from anyone would be great.
Walter PlingeWed, 4 Jan 2006, 02:31 pm
Re: Stage Door School in Subiaco
Pity you don't want Full Time coz The Entertainment Factory is great and you could probably apply for some sort of scholarship they offer them. Its really full on though you would be able to work full time only part time. They have got good teachers lined up that's all. A lot of them work/ed closely with WAPPA, Napien and NIDA and some are from london like Itali Conti and stuff.
Probably doesn't help but lettin ya know!

Stage Door
Hi guys
i am doing mus th at stage door and over the last few years 11 students from the courses have gone into uni level courses in WA and overseas. Singapore (4) Cotrary to the opinions above it is well organised with great teachers and a no nonsense approach. Ian Westrip is the teacher of singing and he was at WAAPA for 18 yrs so there you go! Dancing is great as is acting with Michael Loney and George Shevtsov (check google) Its working for me hey and i noticed the guys bagging it either are in WAAPA thanks to SD or didnt get in well who are they then???? Get in touch with them is my advice.
mishaMon, 29 May 2006, 02:44 pm Re:stage door in subiaco
Avea
I have seen some people talking bout the entertainment factory I myself am looking for a musical theatre course or theatre course. I have been intouch with the entertainment factory and you can do the courses part time but you still need to audition as normal and the audtions are in August.
Hope this helps

Madam, Mister
I seek to contact Mrs Rhoda Lopez which I knew in 1999 in Belgium during his stay of the Rotary drill. The addresses mall in my possession are not correct any more. I see his name appearing on your site. I thus suppose that you can contact it. Could you transmit my message and my co-ordinates to him.
Afflicted for the disturbance.

From all I've seen and
From all I've seen and heard from the Entertainment Factory, I would not recommend it. In the shows I;ve seen, all the singers I could actually hear were out of tune. The singing teachers aren't really up to scratch, or they weren't last time they put on a show, anyway.
I would definitely go for Stage Door, out of the two. Ian Westrip is an amazing teacher.
Walter PlingeFri, 9 June 2006, 05:34 pm
stage door
i dont want to start a debate thing coz i think everything has been said in previous posts and both schools have positives for different people... now obviously this is my opinion but from what i have seen and heard the entertainment factory actually has great singing teachers and just a side note, i personally wouldnt pay what stage door is asking for a course that isnt recognised...
Walter PlingeMon, 3 July 2006, 10:15 am
i don't want to get into a
i don't want to get into a debate either, but The Ent Fac actually hasn't had a show yet... they did two years go when it was unaccredited but I was at that show and the performances were amazing!!! The energy and harmonies uh -- really enjoyed it! but as ent fac no show as of yet.. Justin McNamara is one of the singing teachers of Musical Theatre there now and he is just Fantastic I have been taught by him before!
Walter PlingeMon, 3 July 2006, 01:09 pm
I stand by my earlier
I stand by my earlier point. What I've seen from the Entertainment Factory does not show me that it has good teachers. Bystander, I'd be interested to know what show you saw them do? "Amazing" isn't a word I'd use to describe the shows I've seen.
RaveMon, 3 July 2006, 02:59 pm Stage Door
Probably Stage Door would be best bet every though fees are huge. Guy I know who is a WAAPA this year did say SD was waste of time but hey he got into WAAPA from there.
If you cant get into WAAPA where do you go??? Well Stage Door is probably best bet if you have the money, I would recommend any training, its better than no training in MT. Keep up your skills you cant go wrong.
Walter PlingeFri, 28 July 2006, 02:00 pm
dancing where to start??
hello i am currently trying to decide to if i should study dancing/acting at stage door or entertainment factory (anywhere really). i have very little dancing/acting experience and i am 29 yrs old.
I am following my dream but i wonder if i am being real, considering my age and experience, of getting into the industry??
It's never too late.
Do you love it?
then do it.
There are worse things to do with your life than follow a dream.
Sure, it's harder when you're older, and there will be roles/opportunities you will never get over a talented 20 year old. Have a go anyway!
Just be strategic about your approach and keep asking questions. Don't spend money until you know that the place you're going to is aligned with what you want, where you're going, and is interested in customising what you learn to have the best impact.
(and 29 is not old!) :-)

i wouldnt recommend this to any one.
Walter PlingeTue, 22 Aug 2006, 06:10 pm
I recommend Ian Westrip for
I recommend Ian Westrip for singing, and Jody Marshall for dancing. Contrary to prior posts, it is not bitchy there at all. The only way I could see that happening was if you were an instigator causing trouble. However, it is best for people who have a bit of experience. You will get taught how to dance with style there, which is more than I can say for other 'trendy' places popping up around Perth.
Ian is brilliant for beginners. I had never had a singing lesson in my life before starting with Ian, and I got accepted into WAAPA through his hard work with me (if that is what your goal is).
Walter PlingeThu, 24 Aug 2006, 07:29 am
How long had you been
How long had you been singing before you got into waapa, are you in the BA or Certificate.
Where is Ian Westrip, do I find him in the phone book. What area is he I mean? I need some extra help before the audition. Is he expensive??
Sorry about the 100 questions but it is great to get feedback.
Walter PlingeThu, 24 Aug 2006, 02:14 pm
I started singing in 2001
I started singing in 2001 and I auditioned at the end of 2003, I got into the certificate course. He teaches singing at Stage Door in Subiaco, it is 1 Price st, but you will be his private student and not a student of Stage Door. He charges the same as other singing teachers, I think it is around $40 per half hour, but it is worth it if you want to improve your singing and get the edge for auditioning for WAAPA. He was on their staff at WAAPA and the lecturers have a lot of respect for him.
