Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

Well, looks like no one got in. How did Cayra's daughter go, hope she got in or is she off to MacKay. Everything is quiet now Christmas is upon us.

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

She got a C letter (which means no thanks) ... so if you haven't had a letter but you've had a call back that's possibly a good sign

Thanks for thinking of her Mel

She thought she did well at the call backs and we thought there were only about 45 at call backs... we heard mention of 30 spots but I thought it was 15 (in MT anyway)

No matter... Mackay is warmer :-)

To be honest we know little about the course but the administration has been super helpful and the website lists a lot of staff well connected to the industry

(and they are doing Little Shop of Horrors this year as a production which is one of her favourites)

She'll still be 20 when she completes three years there...so if she still wanted to try the 'other' places

I still thinks she gets a bit overlooked as she's only 17 and is only 4 foot 11... still she discovered that's the exact same height as Kristen Chenowith (original and probably best Glynda)

The odds were better there... about 60 odd auditions for 15 spots

I suspect they will be a few other offers from other courses she has put in for (drama, acting) but she'll still with Mackay as it's Musical Theatre

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter didn't get into the Arts Academy...sounded like she would have been a shoe in! From what I see of the course outline at CQU it looks great - different to Ballarat in a number of areas and a bit more flexible with electives from 2nd year. Add to that the individual singing lessons and being a part of a full production in first year, and she could be quite happy. Distance is a bit of an issue, but being too close is as much of a problem when they can't decide if it's the right place to be! You're right about the weather too; Ballarat had snow this year. Best wishes, I hope your daughter loves life in Queensland.

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

Thanks TRB

I guess no one is ever a shoe in...(she never thought she was .. but I thought she had a good chance with so much experience) .. and for all the people who miss out on their chosen course ,for every 15 that get in there must be a large number of very talented people who miss out because... well just because someone has to...

We're sure she'd be happy at Ballarat and that it is a great course but now we're into the 'hey it's more fun in Queensland mode' :-)

I think the point about easier to return home is a very valid one and if nothing else, I know that this feels more of an adventure for her...

Cost is a huge problem ... she doesn't qualify for youth allowance due to the fact my wife and I earn too much...(it doesn't feel like we do) but I have to adjust the mortgage to help her with accomodation for a while... I thought she might get some sort of living away from home allowance... but nope... hopefully a part time job shouldn't be too hard to find

The CQU course doesn't seem very well known at all... hope I canm put a good report about it here soon

Not unless she divorces us... or we beat her... or she's pregnant
None of those sound like much fun for anyone

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

I do hope your daughter gets in somewhere. There is nothing more disheartening than hearing over and over 'your talented but your too young'. Obviously she has the talent and is prepared for the move and thats half the battle. Good luck to her. Keep us posted with her progress.

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

Cayra

I hear you re the cost. Like you I'm a teacher and hubby and I earn too much to get any allowance even though she stayed in Res in Ballarat. There is an allowance you can get if you earn over something like $16 000 in the 18 months after you leave school. But doing Music Theatre, there is so little time to work, that will never happen. And the other options are just a little extreme. What we do for our kids eh? That's why I keep saying that I should be happy, cost wise, that she isn't going back next year (justification?) Still she is deferring and might be back. Looking forward to hearing reports of the CQU course.

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

Thanks LK
She definately in at Mackay
We found that out before year 12 exams and other auditions as she sent a tape (which took the pressure off a bit) I've all ready sent 4 weeks accomodation as bond so now she has to go :-)

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

Thats fantastic Cayra, Im sure she will enjoy it. Whether the name of the course is 'out there' or not, meanings nothing. The fact that she is doing a music theatre course is. After her first year she can reapply to WAAPA and and/or other courses she feels she would like better if it doesnt work out.

I agree with you, the system isnt fair - I cannot get any youth allowance for my daughter either. Its ok for Centrelink to say we earn too much money but when you look at all the additionals your child needs - weekly accommodation, bond, etc. $150 - $200 (maybe more) it is alot of money out of your wage. This is not something we would generally fork out if they were living at home.

I suppose they look at it as a luxury. We dont have to send them there but we as parents want to give our kids the best opportunities, therefore we pay for it!!

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

You'd think they'd be a little rent assistance... You'd have to earn about 520 to get the 326 a fortnight after tax (326 living away from home allowance)

While I'm on this tired old hobby horse.. I think your first degree or diploma should be free of fees anyway

Re: BAPA Who heard if their in?

Me and my friend both got in at Ballarat...she was also accepted to mackay (i didnt' audition) so she will be choosing between there and BAPA. I'm off to sydney to do the NIDA singer actor dancer course.

good luck to everyone who auditioned for anything this year...keep us updated with all your news.

p.s is there anyone else on here who's going to BAPA or NIDA?
