AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE OF THE TONY AWARD-WINNING BROADWAY MUSICAL ‘RAGTIME’

On Saturday 3 September MonUCS (The Monash University Choral Society) will be performing the Australian Premiere of the Broadway musical RAGTIME in a concert performance at Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School, 123 Marshall Street Ivanhoe, conducted by Trevor Jones.

Tickets are available through Monash Arts (9905 1111) at $22 concession and $28 adult, with a surcharge for credit card purchases. Depending on demand, a matinee performance on Sunday September 4th may be announced closer to the concert date.

RAGTIME debuted on Broadway in 1998, and won four Tony Awards (Best Featured Actress, Book, Score and Orchestration).

The story is set in early 20th century America, and follows the lives of an immigrant and his motherless daughter, a wealthy family, a black man (Coalhouse Walker), and his lover (Sarah), as the stories intertwine to produce a powerful and moving story of love, loss, oppression and industry, with a comic twist.

Adapted from the book by Terrence McNally, with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and based on E. L. DoctorowÂ’s distinguished novel, the musical merits of RAGTIME are undeniable.

MonUCS is a wholly student run Choir formed in 1962, is a part of AICSA (Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies Association) and performs a variety of works ranging from Mozart to Gilbert and Sullivan.
